The year 2026 has belonged to Bollywood sequels. Back-to-back, beloved franchises returned to the big screen, and audiences responded with genuine enthusiasm. Some of these films shattered box office records with staggering earnings, while others gripped viewers with stories powerful enough to leave a lasting mark.
Border 2 Revives a Beloved Franchise
A sequel to the 1997 blockbuster Border had been generating enormous anticipation for a long time, and Border 2 delivered on that excitement. Bringing together Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahaan Shetty in lead roles, the film struck a deep chord with audiences and went on to collect Rs 325 crore at the box office.
Rani Mukerji Carries Mardaani 3 to Victory
Every film in the Mardaani series has been a commercial success, and Mardaani 3 kept that run going. Rani Mukerji singlehandedly won audiences over with her performance and turned the film into a box office winner. The film registered over Rs 50 crore in business.
Dhurundhar 2: The Undisputed Blockbuster of the Year
If one film defined 2026 at the box office, it was Dhurundhar 2. Starring Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, and Arjun Rampal, the film not only pulled off a historic run at the box office but also gave Ranveer Singh's career a powerful new direction. Its worldwide collection stood at approximately Rs 1375 crore, a figure that no other Hindi film this year has come close to matching. Every release that followed Dhurundhar 2 fell well short of its numbers. The film's songs were equally popular and dominated the charts. Worth noting is that the original Dhurundhar also performed very well commercially, and together the two films made a formidable combined impact on Hindi cinema.
Cocktail 2 Posts Steady Early Numbers
The most recent entry in 2026's sequel lineup is Cocktail 2, directed by Homi Adajania and starring Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna. The film has been running to a moderate response in theatres and collected Rs 53.85 crore at the domestic box office in its first four days alone.
Welcome to the Jungle on June 26, Dhamaal 4 on July 10
The sequel parade is far from over. Welcome to the Jungle is arriving in cinemas on June 26 of this year, and fans are counting down eagerly. The film features one of the biggest ensemble casts of the year, bringing together Akshay Kumar, Raveena Tandon, Suniel Shetty, Sanjay Dutt, Paresh Rawal, Disha Patani, Lara Dutta, and Jacqueline Fernandez, among others.
Hot on its heels comes Dhamaal 4, directed by Indra Kumar, releasing on July 10. The comedy film stars Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh, Ravi Kishan, Javed Jafri, and Sanjida Sheikh. Fans of the franchise have been waiting with palpable excitement for this one.
