On the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima, acclaimed filmmaker Karan Johar shared a deeply personal reflection paying tribute to two key figures who shaped his career, legendary actor Shah Rukh Khan and veteran director Aditya Chopra. Expressing his profound gratitude on social media, Johar credited both personalities for believing in his potential long before he had confidence in himself. Along with nostalgic photographs posted on Instagram, the director noted that two specific conversations fundamentally transformed the trajectory of his life.
The 1 AM Advice That Changed Everything
Recalling the first major turning point of his life, Karan Johar revealed that the story traces back to a period when he was actively preparing to move abroad for higher studies. At the time, his daily routine was fast-paced and chaotic, and pursuing film direction was nowhere on his radar. Late one night around 1 AM, director Aditya Chopra approached him with an offer to work alongside him on the landmark feature film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Chopra not only invited him to join the crew but also strongly urged him to consider entering direction, warning that failing to choose this path would be a massive mistake.
Aditya Chopra's words left such a powerful impression on Johar that he found himself unable to sleep throughout the entire night. The recommendation completely reshaped his outlook, prompting him to rethink his future plans and choose a whole new career path starting the very next morning.
Seeking One Year From His Father to Learn on Set
Moved by Aditya Chopra's encouragement, Karan Johar approached his father the following morning to request a one-year hiatus from his higher education plans. He asked his father for permission to spend a year working directly on movie sets to learn the craft of filmmaking from the ground up. His father looked into his eyes and asked whether he knew what actually takes place on a film set. Johar candidly admitted that he had no idea whatsoever.
His father then asked him to make a firm commitment to work extremely hard and follow every instruction meticulously. Explaining the distinction between roles, his father noted that dedication and discipline could make someone a fine producer, but becoming a director requires absolute passion. Johar reflected that while he certainly possessed the enthusiasm to work hard at that time, he lacked self-belief, a confidence that Aditya Chopra held for him instead.
A Promise Made on the Mountains of Switzerland
Sharing the second pivotal moment of his career, Karan Johar recounted a memorable experience while filming amidst the scenic mountains of Switzerland. Feeling homesick and yearning for a bit of warmth and empathy, he was approached by actor Shah Rukh Khan. Stepping up to him, Khan made a surprising pledge, assuring Johar that he would turn director and that Khan would star in his directorial debut.
Johar initially dismissed the gesture, privately speculating that the high altitude and low oxygen levels might be clouding Khan's judgment. He doubted whether the superstar realized the magnitude of the commitment he was making. However, upon returning to India, Shah Rukh Khan demonstrated complete seriousness by personally speaking with Johar's father about the proposed film project. Even Johar's father was initially skeptical of the promise, but Khan remained firmly committed to fulfilling his word.
Expressing Heartfelt Gratitude on Guru Purnima
Concluding his emotional tribute, Karan Johar expressed immense love and admiration for both Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan. He stated that whatever he represents today, including his strengths, vulnerabilities, triumphs, and failures, is entirely owed to their guidance and steadfast support. He added that his ability to tell stories to the world today exists purely because of the trust they placed in him.
On Guru Purnima, Johar extended his warmest greetings to his two mentors while honoring all teachers and guides who selflessly uplift others and help pave the way for their success.
