When audiences watch pulse-pounding stunts unfold on the silver screen, few realize how narrowly the performers often escape catastrophic harm. To bring authenticity to the narrative, many actors choose to perform complex sequences without stunt doubles. Yet even with elaborate safety planning, sudden mechanical breakdowns, unpredictable fire, or split-second timing errors can transform an ordinary production schedule into an emergency. Over the decades, several prominent cinematic figures have stared death in the face while working on elaborate film sets.
The Fire That Trapped Nargis and Sparked a Romance
One of the earliest and most dramatic real-life rescues in cinematic history involved actress Nargis. While filming a sequence, an uncontrolled fire suddenly swept through the shooting floor. Trapped directly in the center of the raging blaze, Nargis was surrounded by flames with virtually no route of escape. Seeing the immediate danger, fellow actor Sunil Dutt charged into the fire without hesitation to pull her out to safety. Dutt sustained injuries during the heroic rescue, but the ordeal created a profound bond between the two performers, eventually leading to their marriage.
Amitabh Bachchan and the Near-Fatal Blow in Bengaluru
Among the most widely discussed accidents in cinematic lore was the critical injury suffered by Amitabh Bachchan during a fight sequence filmed in Bengaluru. While choreographing physical combat, co-actor Puneet Issar inadvertently landed a punch with excessive force. The internal trauma left Bachchan severely ill, prompting an urgent hospitalization that lasted several months. His condition remained perilous for an extended period, requiring extensive medical interventions and bed rest before he could resume normal physical activity.
Hrithik Roshan and the Fifty-Foot Singapore Plunge
During the 2005 production of the superhero feature ‘Krrish’ in Singapore, Hrithik Roshan was executing an aerial stunt suspended high above the street from a tall structure. Without warning, the primary safety wire supporting his weight snapped, sending the actor into a freefall of approximately 50 feet. Miraculously, his fall was broken by the fabric canopy of a street shop below. That unexpected awning absorbed the kinetic impact, sparing him catastrophic fractures or a fatal landing and leaving him without critical bodily injuries.
Shahid Kapoor and the Fiery Chemical Hazard
High-energy action sequences in the film ‘R… Rajkumar’ demanded intense physical commitment from Shahid Kapoor. During one particular shot, a flaming arc was engineered to sweep over him while chemical drops hung overhead. Any slight miscalculation in timing threatened to release volatile chemical drops directly onto him amid open fire. Kapoor managed to clear the zone just in time, averting severe burns and chemical exposure in what could have been a debilitating set accident.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and the Rogue Vehicle
Vehicular stunts carry unique risks because mechanical momentum cannot always be halted instantaneously. While filming on location, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was struck by an out-of-control jeep that veered off its intended path. The vehicle struck her directly, causing painful injuries that required immediate medical attention. Attending physicians instructed her to undergo complete physical rest, halting her schedule to ensure the trauma did not worsen.
Emraan Hashmi and the Airborne SUV
While working on the action-heavy title ‘Gunmaster G9’, Emraan Hashmi faced acute physical danger during the climactic shoot. The stunt called for an SUV to flip through the air and crash onto a stationary black van. The airborne vehicle landed perilously close to Hashmi, missing him by mere inches as metal crumpled on impact. Although he sustained minor injuries during the chaotic sequence, swift reactions prevented the stunt from turning into a devastating collision.
Akshay Kumar and the Eye Injury During Production
Renowned for executing his own demanding choreography, Akshay Kumar has consistently put his physical wellbeing on the line. In December 2024, while shooting scenes for ‘Housefull 5’, an airborne fragment struck him directly in the eye. Given the sensitivity of ocular trauma, he was escorted to an eye specialist without delay. The medical specialist administered treatment and ordered strict rest to facilitate healing. To avoid stalling the entire project, the crew continued shooting sequences featuring other ensemble cast members while Kumar took necessary medical leave.
