When Suneel Darshan cast two fresh faces for his 2003 romantic drama Andaaz, few knew that one of those newcomers would go on to build a global career. Passing up opportunities to collaborate with top Bollywood stars like Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Aishwarya Rai, the director opted for a brand-new onscreen pairing. Yet, when Miss World titleholder Priyanka Chopra first walked into his office for a meeting, Darshan was far from swept away. He initially viewed her as quite ordinary, questioning how she had secured her international beauty title. It took only a few moments of conversation, however, for his perception to turn completely around as he recognized a striking resemblance to a young Rekha.
Choosing Fresh Talent Over Established Stars
Suneel Darshan had established his reputation during the 1990s by directing notable mainstream hits such as Ajay, Jaanwar, and Ek Rishtaa. In early 2003, he directed Kareena Kapoor in Talaash: The Hunt Begins. Following that project, he decided to chart a different creative path for his upcoming film Andaaz. Although he had access to established leading ladies like Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Aishwarya Rai, Darshan wanted to bring fresh energy to the big screen rather than repeating familiar pairings.
To achieve this vision, he set out to find two new actresses who looked distinct from existing stars. Lara Dutta was brought into the project after Darshan saw her featured in a magazine photo shoot alongside Akshay Kumar. At that time, Dutta held the titles of Miss Intercontinental 1997 and Miss Universe 2000, and Andaaz was slated to be her feature film acting debut. Meanwhile, Priyanka Chopra was receiving widespread media attention following her Miss World victory, though she had only signed two film projects at the time. Darshan instructed his team to bring both newcomers on board to ensure a fresh onscreen aesthetic.
From an Ordinary First Impression to the Glimpse of a Young Rekha
Priyanka Chopra's initial office visit did not make an immediate splash with the director. Seeing her without elaborate styling or makeup, Darshan thought she appeared plain and admitted to wondering about the factors that led to her Miss World crown. But as they sat down to talk, his perspective shifted dramatically within minutes. During their interaction, Darshan suddenly caught a glimpse of a young Rekha in her facial features and expression.
Reflecting on that pivotal interaction, Darshan noted that Rekha shared a similar appearance without cosmetics during her early years, recalling, "Without makeup, Rekha ji looked just like that as well." Beyond her looks, he was impressed by Priyanka's fluent Hindi language skills and sharp intellect. He also observed a minor issue regarding her nose at the time, which she subsequently had corrected. That single meeting dispelled all initial doubts, securing her casting in the film.
Rapid Production and a Major Breakthrough
Production on Andaaz progressed at a remarkably swift pace under Darshan's leadership. The entire project was wrapped and released in theaters within nine months from the start of principal photography. For Priyanka Chopra, the movie became a massive career breakthrough. While she had previously appeared in The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, that role had failed to generate significant attention. Andaaz provided her with the spotlight needed to establish herself firmly in the film industry.
Darshan later remarked that Priyanka stood out from many other heroines he had directed over the years. He highlighted her keen interpersonal awareness and professional intelligence, noting that she understood industry dynamics exceptionally well and knew exactly how to navigate working relationships effectively.
Priyanka Chopra's Current Work and Upcoming Slate
Today, Priyanka Chopra commands an international screen presence. She was most recently seen starring in the film The Bluff. Currently, she is engaged in principal photography for director SS Rajamouli's upcoming cinematic project Varanasi, which stars South Indian actor Mahesh Babu in a prominent role.
