Travelers who have grown tired of spending the final morning of their vacations stripping linens and hauling rubbish will soon receive major relief. Home rental platform Airbnb has updated its policy to forbid hosts from assigning cleaning chores to guests, effective for all reservations finalized on or after November 20. The company announced the change to property owners via email on Wednesday, sparking immediate and intense fury among hosts who argue that they are being stripped of their authority to demand basic cleanliness from paying visitors.
The announcement created immediate uproar across private community channels and online rental forums. Many property managers expressed anxiety over property wear and tear, arguing that without basic checkout responsibilities, guests will leave rental spaces in unacceptable states. One property owner posting on the official company forum argued that hosts bear the primary duty of safeguarding their assets and living areas, adding that the platform routinely asks operators to absorb operational hazards while gradually diminishing their protective boundaries. On Reddit, another contributor compared the dynamic with the platform to an abusive personal relationship, a sentiment that prompted several peers to state that they are ready to delist their rentals entirely unless substantial concessions are made. Another host indicated that they plan to counter the mandate by gutting their rental kitchens down to minimal cooking implements.
Travelers Applaud an End to Double Charging
While property owners expressed deep frustration, travelers reacted with enthusiasm to the news. For multiple years, guest dissatisfaction had been climbing due to the growing custom of property owners levying triple digit cleaning charges while simultaneously leaving detailed lists of domestic duties on the kitchen counter. Checking out often required guests to run dishwashers, pull every bedsheet, carry laundry hampers into utility rooms, and haul heavy garbage bags out to street curbs.
Guests have frequently pointed out the inherent contradiction in paying a professional turnaround fee while being expected to perform preliminary janitorial work. A user in a rental discussion group noted that travelers are not fundamentally opposed to running an appliance or taking care of basic mess, provided they are not simultaneously billed a separate cleaning assessment running upwards of $100. From the traveler viewpoint, paying premium hospitality rates should exempt guests from having to prepare the rental for hired cleaning personnel.
System Blocks Prevent Sneaking Chores into Listings
To ensure that property owners do not merely shuffle chore lists into different fields, Airbnb confirmed that hosts are barred from moving cleanup tasks into the 'Requests' portion of their property pages. Simon Letouze, a spokesperson for the platform, noted that property owners are still permitted to present standard and practical inquiries, such as asking visitors to place soiled cutlery and plates inside the sink basin. Other permissible expectations highlighted by the enterprise involve asking people to limit water usage during municipal drought alerts or mandating that food scraps go into specialized containers engineered to keep bears away.
The technological enforcement behind this rule is already appearing on host dashboards. Inside a private Facebook community, one property owner presented an image of an unsuccessful update to their listing settings. The host had submitted instructions requiring visitors to wash dishes, leave damp towels in the washroom, and navigate to an off-site dumpster located in a nearby recreational vehicle park by reading a refrigerator diagram. When clicking the save button, the application interface underlined the text in red and generated a modal notice stating plainly that guests should not be instructed to execute such duties.
Ban on Secondary Check-In Agreements
Alongside the chore prohibition, the platform is shutting down the widespread practice of requiring visitors to execute separate physical or digital contracts upon arrival. Starting on November 20, hosts cannot make guests sign auxiliary agreements unless very narrow criteria are met. Acceptable carve-outs include direct mandates imposed by municipal jurisdictions, long-term extended stays, or agreements tied to supplemental elective amenities such as hiring a motorized golf cart.
Whenever an approved exception applies, the property owner must detail the exact legal condition within a designated field on the property profile before the customer completes the transaction. Furthermore, the company clarified that it accepts no responsibility for enforcing the conditions established inside these independent contracts. Property managers who attempt to sidestep the restrictions face escalating administrative penalties, starting with compliance warnings and extending to permanent removal from the directory or full termination of host memberships.
Boycott Discussions and Flawed Workaround Plans
The severity of the policy shifts led some hosts to discuss aggressive retaliation against company leadership. Inside community groups, drafts of complaint letters were shared, with creators demanding that management preserve the host's right to establish common-sense house standards. Other users discussed raising standard nightly rates to offset independent cleaning labor, while several individuals urged hosts to coordinate an organized strike. One participant wrote that delisting accommodations across the ecosystem for even a single weekend would deliver a decisive statement about which party truly supplies the foundation of the platform's value.
Concurrently, other hosts attempted to invent technical maneuvers to bypass the restrictions. Suggestions surfaced regarding moving chore guidelines to alternative segments such as the 'Guest Access' field. Another host proposed issuing a detailed physical household booklet upon arrival and demanding that visitors reveal a hidden codeword to confirm they had reviewed the rules. Community peers quickly cautioned that trying to enforce secret passwords breaches standing community policies. While hosts highlighted severe scenarios like heavy cigarette smoke, piles of rotting refuse, or ruined bed sheets, the platform emphasized that standard guest conduct rules already handle these infractions.
AirCover Safeguards and Core Platform Standards
The company maintains that property owners are not being abandoned to property destruction. Baseline requirements built into every reservation require travelers to treat accommodations with care, properly dispose of food waste, and avoid creating hazardous conditions. Should an occupant cause property destruction or remove furnishings, the host retains the right to seek reasonable financial restoration from the guest directly.
Beyond individual guest collections, the platform provides institutional protection through its integrated AirCover program. The policy supplies up to $3 million in coverage for qualified property damage generated by visitors, extending protection across interior furnishings, architectural components, and parked automobiles. Specialized remediation, including professional smoke odor extraction and the treatment of pet messes, falls under this safety umbrella as well. The organization underscored that the cleaning fees set by hosts are designed strictly to cover standard turnaround labor, such as vacuuming and laundering linens, rather than operating as punitive charges for unperformed chores.
