A major welfare initiative is set to transform the daily lives of thousands of women who prepare meals and look after children in council-run schools across Amethi. These workers, who have long faced significant financial hurdles and modest compensation, are finally being integrated into comprehensive social security frameworks. Not only has their monthly honorarium seen a substantial increase, but they are also being granted essential healthcare and safety perks that will secure their futures. Over 3,800 female cooks scattered throughout the Amethi district stand to benefit directly from this progressive step, freeing them from persistent financial distress and removing the fear of helplessness during medical emergencies.
Stepped-Up Honorarium and Comprehensive Insurance Coverage
A total of 3891 cooks operate across more than 1570 council-run educational institutions in the Amethi district. Their compensation has seen gradual revisions over the years, starting from meager amounts before moving to 500 rupees, 1000 rupees, 2000 rupees, and now a direct hike to 3000 rupees per month. Along with this enhanced financial remuneration, these workers are being provided with accident insurance protection and cashless medical treatment coverage of up to 5 lakh rupees. District officials note that this comprehensive package aims to alleviate the economic pressures that these grassroots workers have historically faced while performing their daily duties.
Workers Share Their Relief and Gratitude
Following the rollout of these enhanced benefits, the women working in these school kitchens have expressed profound relief and happiness. Rita Devi, a local school cook, shared that this initiative is a wonderful development for their community, emphasizing that having access to free medical treatment up to 5 lakh rupees means they will no longer have to wander around in distress or struggle with previously low earnings and limited facilities.
Echoing similar sentiments, Prabha Devi noted that the expansion of facilities is a welcome change because the increased money combined with a health insurance cover ensures they will never need to beg anyone for financial assistance during a crisis. Suman Devi added that the arrangement is extremely beneficial, highlighting that the addition of a 2 lakh rupee accident insurance policy alongside the raised salary and medical access provides much-needed stability compared to the insufficient pay they received in the past.
Administrative Commitment to Worker Welfare
Arun Tripathi, the district MDM in-charge, stated that welfare measures for the school cooks are undertaken on a continuous basis. He noted that these workers perform their duties with strict attention to meal quality and that authorities are constantly striving to provide them with the best possible facilities. Future actions will continue to be guided by whatever directives are issued at the government level to ensure ongoing support for these kitchen workers.
