Among these innovators is Rakesh Rai, a progressive farmer based in the Tahbarpur region, who has turned to commercial banana cultivation to boost his earnings.
Yield potential and production strategy
Rakesh Rai has planted approximately 1,000 banana saplings across a two-bigha land parcel. By applying scientific cultivation methods, he expects each plant to yield between 30 to 35 kilograms of fruit. Given this high production volume, he is well-positioned to generate earnings running into lakhs of rupees in a single season. Depending on seasonal fluctuations in the market, banana prices often reach between 20 and 25 rupees per kilogram, proving to be a highly profitable venture for farmers managing costs effectively.
Incentives and government support
According to Rai, agriculture is no longer the small-scale activity it was once considered. Through professional management and commercial planning, farmers can achieve significant financial success. Beyond his primary crop, he also engages in seasonal vegetable farming. A key driver for this success is the support from the horticulture department. Under the National Horticulture Mission, farmers are eligible for financial grants to assist with banana cultivation. These farmers can receive up to 1.5 lakh rupees in subsidies, which significantly offsets the initial investment required for the farm.
Opportunities for multi-cropping
One of the primary benefits of banana farming is the ability to grow multiple crops simultaneously. Farmers can utilize the remaining open space between the banana trees to plant various vegetables. This intercropping strategy allows farmers to cultivate more than one crop at a time, providing an additional stream of revenue and ensuring that the land is maximized for productivity throughout the growth cycle.
