Customers operating accounts with public sector lenders could face significant disruptions in routine branch services towards the end of September. A convergence of scheduled weekend holidays and a proposed multi-day agitation by bank employee unions threatens to bring in-person banking operations to a halt for five consecutive days. Account holders requiring counter services, physical verification, or time-sensitive paperwork are encouraged to finalize their transactions before September 25 to avoid prolonged delays.
Five-Day Continuous Disruption Expected at Branches
The operational shutdown begins on September 26, which marks the fourth Saturday of the month, a mandatory pan-India bank holiday. The following day, September 27, will see all bank branches remain closed for their weekly Sunday break. Immediately following the weekend, bank employees plan to proceed with a three-day nationwide strike scheduled from Monday, September 28, through Wednesday, September 30. If the agitation goes ahead as declared, banking counters across the country will stay closed from Saturday through Wednesday. Customers needing essential services like physical demand drafts, signature verifications, or large cash transactions are urged to complete their tasks by September 25.
United Forum of Bank Unions Proposes Three-Day Agitation
The country's largest public sector lender, State Bank of India (SBI), outlined the situation through a public notice issued on its official social media channels. In a statement shared on X, the bank revealed that the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has served notice proposing a three-day strike spanning September 28 to September 30. SBI clarified that while the administration is taking necessary measures to maintain continuity of vital banking functions during the strike window, branch-level operations may witness interruptions. Consequently, the bank urged account holders to wrap up pending branch commitments well before the proposed strike window commences.
SBI Highlights Alternative and Digital Banking Channels
To reduce customer inconvenience and ensure that financial transfers proceed without interruption, SBI has recommended that patrons turn to automated and self-service touchpoints. The advisory suggests the following options
- Use automated teller machines (ATMs) and Automated Deposit cum Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs) to meet immediate cash requirements.
- Visit local Customer Service Points (CSPs) for basic banking support and routine assisted services.
- Leverage online banking options including internet banking, the YONO mobile application, mobile banking, UPI, and other digital interfaces for day-to-day payments and fund transfers.
Branches to Operate on Only Two Days Across a Nine-Day Stretch
The disruption will extend into the early days of October. Following the weekend holidays and the three-day strike, branches are scheduled to reopen on Thursday, October 1. However, operations will immediately halt again on Friday, October 2, as all banks across India observe a national holiday for Gandhi Jayanti. Branches will briefly reopen on Saturday, October 3, before closing once more for Sunday, October 4. Over the entire nine-day span between September 26 and October 4, bank branches will be functional on just two individual dates, with operations remaining suspended on the remaining seven days.
