Banking services all over India are preparing for major disruptions this month as the United Forum of Bank Unions has officially announced a series of strikes. The planned walkouts are driven by a range of long-pending demands put forward by employees, which include the implementation of a five-day banking week, critical pension-related issues, and necessary changes to the Performance Linked Incentive scheme.
Key Strike Dates In September
The first bank strike of September 2026 is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 11th. Following this initial stoppage, a much longer three-day bank strike will run from September 28 through September 30. Furthermore, the bank unions have issued a stern warning that an indefinite bank strike could commence from October 26th if authorities fail to address their grievances.
The upcoming September 11 bank strike has been organized by the United Forum of Bank Unions, an umbrella body representing major bank employees and officers unions across the nation. These groups are actively protesting against numerous unresolved issues that directly affect the daily working conditions and financial security of bank personnel.
The Five-Day Banking Week Demand
One of the most prominent demands on the table is the long-standing proposal for a five-day banking week. Under this proposed system, commercial banks would operate exclusively from Monday to Friday, keeping physical branches closed on both Saturdays and Sundays.
The push for a 5-day banking week in India has been a subject of debate for years. While the introduction of mandatory holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays was previously welcomed as an initial step toward this objective, the core issue has remained in limbo, prompting renewed industrial action and union pressure.
Another major point of contention involves the revised Performance Linked Incentive scheme. The unions are pressing for the complete withdrawal or substantial modification of the revised framework that was directed by the Department of Financial Services specifically for Scale IV officers and above.
Pension Updation And Digital Services
In addition to incentive schemes, bank unions are demanding comprehensive pension updation and improvement, alongside a uniform dearness allowance formula that applies equally to all bank pensioners. They have also strongly requested an option allowing employees currently covered under the National Pension System to seamlessly shift back to the Old Pension Scheme.
Despite the physical branch closures, customers may still find relief through digital channels. ATM services, UPI, mobile banking, and internet banking during the September 2026 bank strike are expected to remain operational, as digital banking infrastructure generally functions independently from physical branch networks.
