Graphic design platform Canva has unveiled a major restructuring of its workforce and operating model, a transition that is set to impact 1,271 employees across the organization. In an internal communication sent to the workforce, Chief Executive Officer Melanie Perkins outlined the upcoming changes to the company structure. Under this strategic shift, some employees will transition into newly realigned roles, others will be asked to relocate to designated major office hubs, and a segment of the staff will be let go from the organization.
Aligning Teams with Emerging Technical Needs and Office Hubs
Melanie Perkins stated that the restructuring is driven by the company's future technological requirements, workspace priorities, and the need for updated skill sets. As digital demands evolve, the organization is realigning its teams to focus on modern engineering and operational goals. For many team members, this will mean taking on altered responsibilities or moving closer to primary operational hubs. However, for those positions that cannot be accommodated under the new workflow, employment will conclude with an extensive support package.
Guaranteed Six-Month Salary, Extended Healthcare, and Equity Relief
To cushion the transition for departing staff, Canva has assembled a comprehensive severance framework. Every departing employee, regardless of their operational location, is guaranteed at least six months of base salary alongside all mandatory statutory dues. Additionally, the company has waived the mandatory one-year equity vesting cliff for employees who joined the platform less than 12 months ago, allowing them earlier access to their shares. In jurisdictions where healthcare coverage is offered, affected personnel and their dependents will remain eligible for 'Canva Care' and medical coverage for the next 12 months.
Retaining Apple MacBooks and Career Transition Resources
Departing team members will not be required to return the Apple MacBook laptops provided to them for corporate duties, allowing them to keep the hardware for personal and future professional use. To assist them in navigating the job market, the organization will also grant each exiting worker a complimentary one-year LinkedIn Premium subscription. Alongside the subscription, workers will receive access to professional career coaching services, resume advisory, and targeted interview preparation sessions to secure their next positions.
A Ten Thousand Dollar Non-Equity Grant for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
A distinctive feature of the exit policy is its dedicated financial backing for entrepreneurial ventures. Staff members who choose to establish an independent startup or small business rather than pursuing another corporate post will be eligible for a 10,000 dollar cash grant. This financial support is strictly non-equity funding, meaning Canva will not seek any equity stake, ownership rights, or future board representation in the new companies launched by these former employees.
