Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal concluded his two-day visit to Berlin, outlining a fundamental transformation in how German industry views India. Rather than seeing the nation purely as a large consumer market, major European corporations are increasingly positioning India as an indispensable manufacturing hub, research platform, and innovation partner.
A Strategic Shift Among German Business Leaders
Reflecting on high-level bilateral discussions, Goyal noted that engagement between the two economies has expanded beyond standard import and export transactions. During his stay in Berlin, the minister held strategic meetings with senior executives from leading corporations, including Siemens Healthcare, Bertelsmann Investments, Volkswagen, and Skoda.
Around 2,000 German enterprises actively operate across various sectors in India. Executives across these organisations reaffirmed that India is now central to their global growth strategy. The expanding collaboration spans beyond the trade of goods and services into talent integration, joint innovation, co-design, co-development, and co-manufacturing.
Addressing Cost Pressures Through Indian Capabilities
Industrial players in Germany currently face intense pressure to reduce operational costs and bolster competitiveness in global markets. Goyal explained that this imperative is driving German firms to explore large-scale manufacturing expansion within India, utilizing its industrial capabilities and favorable cost structures.
German firms heavily rely on Global Capability Centers operating in India. These facilities employ hundreds of thousands of highly skilled young professionals, integrating design and technological advancements into global supply chains and operational frameworks.
Green Energy Partnerships and Investment Stability
European nations are actively seeking deeper ties with India in clean energy sectors, particularly green hydrogen, sustainable infrastructure funding, and environmental initiatives. Addressing global investors at the Berlin Global Dialogue, Goyal highlighted India's reliable and predictable regulatory landscape.
He assured foreign investors that while global commerce faces fragmentation and uncertainty, India guarantees a stable environment and a level playing field. Business entities expanding their footprint in India can count on policy continuity and low geopolitical risk compared to other major markets.
