In a major effort to transform passenger amenities, Northeast Frontier Railway inaugurated a new mall-style commercial and entertainment complex named 'The Terminal' at Guwahati Railway Station in Assam on October 23. Situated at the location of the former Passenger Reservation System (PRS) building along Station Road in Panbazar, this initiative converts waiting time into an engaging shopping and dining experience for commuters, visiting family members, and the public.
All in One Dining, Shopping, and Entertainment Hub
'The Terminal' brings multiple lifestyle facilities under one roof to make waiting for trains comfortable and pleasant. The complex features quick-service restaurant (QSR) outlets representing top national and international food brands. Alongside the dining spaces, a dedicated marketplace offers shoppers access to authentic regional handicrafts, souvenirs, and everyday retail items. This market serves as a practical platform for local artisans, giving them direct access to thousands of daily station visitors.
For families traveling with young children, the facility incorporates a specialized indoor soft play area to keep kids entertained safely. The entire layout has been constructed with aesthetic interior design, specialized seating arrangements, architectural decorative lighting, and green landscaping. Furthermore, Northeast Frontier Railway has implemented comprehensive security, hygiene, sanitation, and firefighting systems in full accordance with standard railway protocols.
Commercial Terms and Non-Fare Revenue Generation
Developed under the New Innovative Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme (NINFRIS) by the Lumding Division, the project repurposes unused railway infrastructure into a commercial asset. Spanning 27,381 square feet, the operational contract for 'The Terminal' has been awarded to Fusion Edge Solution for a period of 5 years at a total contract value of Rs 2.27 crore.
This commercial initiative highlights Northeast Frontier Railway's focus on maximizing asset utilization while driving sustainable non-fare revenue growth beyond regular passenger ticket sales. The model serves as an innovative blueprint for modernizing transit hubs across the regional rail network.
