In the dense forests of Jharkhand, the arrival of the monsoon season triggers the quest for a highly coveted and rare forest produce known locally as 'Rugda'. Often referred to by locals as 'vegetarian mutton' due to its unique texture and rich flavor that mimics meat, this fungal delicacy is a true treasure of nature. Across various tribal regions of the state, it is also frequently called 'Putu'. Authorities are currently in the process of securing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for this unique superfood, aiming to provide it with official recognition on an international scale.
Rugda is entirely wild and, remarkably, cannot be cultivated in fields or using modern farming techniques. It emerges in local markets solely during the peak of the monsoon, specifically in the months of June and July. Because this forest produce is available for such a short duration each year, its rarity creates intense demand. Consequently, it commands a high price in the markets, typically retailing between 1,000 and 1,200 rupees per kilogram, making it one of the most exclusive and sought-after items in Jharkhand.
The process of locating and harvesting Rugda is a traditional skill passed down through generations. Since it does not grow above ground, harvesters must be highly observant. The mushroom develops deep under the soil, usually at a depth of 2 to 3 inches, in small, round shapes similar to marbles or potatoes. As it matures and expands, it exerts pressure on the soil, causing fine cracks to appear on the surface. Locals with extensive forest knowledge identify these subtle signs and use wooden implements to carefully dig out the Rugda without damaging it.
A powerhouse of nutritional value
Beyond its culinary appeal, Rugda is celebrated as a genuine superfood due to its dense nutritional content. Health experts suggest that it possesses significant benefits in combating chronic conditions like asthma and cancer. It is extensively used in the production of various medicinal formulations, as it contains natural compounds that are known to significantly boost human immunity.
In terms of nutritional breakdown, Rugda is a rich source of high-quality protein. Furthermore, it is packed with essential vitamins, including Vitamin C, Vitamin B, riboflavin, thiamine, and Vitamin B12. It also serves as a potent source of vital minerals and nutrients such as folic acid, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and Vitamin D, making it a comprehensive dietary supplement for the local population.
Other Jharkhand products awaiting GI Tag
The state of Jharkhand is currently making concerted efforts to bring global attention to its diverse range of traditional products and crafts. Applications have been formally submitted to the GI registry for several items alongside Rugda. This list includes iconic cultural and agricultural products such as the famous Peda of Deoghar, the Mandar musical instrument, Paitkar painting, Lac bangles, Ragi, Dhuska, and Sal seeds. There is a strong anticipation that these cultural icons will soon receive the GI tag, further strengthening the identity and economic prospects of the region.
