The globally renowned Shahi Litchi of Muzaffarpur is no longer confined to its unique taste and seasonal fruit status. Blending the identity of the fruit with art and creativity, artisans in the city are now crafting attractive gifts and daily-use products shaped like litchis using wax. Being developed under the Lichipuram cultural renaissance campaign, these innovative products have quickly become a major center of attraction among local residents and visitors alike.
Driven by the vision of campaign founder and environmentalist Suresh Gupta, wax artists Mansi Srivastava, Sam, and Jyoti Srivastava are utilizing the litchi shape as a base to create a diverse range of wax items. Prominent among these creations are litchi pots, beer drink cups, tea cups, baskets, positive vibe candles, and scented wax bricks designed to be placed between clothes inside wardrobes. The pricing for these handcrafted items ranges from approximately 120 rupees to 500 rupees.
Utility Meets Decoration in Wax Products
The standout feature of these wax creations is that they are not restricted to being mere decorative showpieces or gifting items, but can also be incorporated into daily routines. The positive vibe candle, in particular, has been drawing considerable attention from buyers. Meanwhile, the scented wax bricks can be tucked away inside wardrobe shelves among garments to keep the clothing pleasantly fragrant over extended periods.
Organizers point out that while Muzaffarpur is universally identified with its litchis, the steady felling of litchi trees over recent years has emerged as a serious concern. This decline directly impacts the local environment, regional employment, and the cultural identity of the city. Addressing this challenge, concerted efforts are underway to establish litchi not just as an edible fruit, but as a vibrant symbol of art, culture, and local heritage.
Lichipuram Art Expands Across Multiple Mediums
Under the umbrella of this ongoing campaign, Lichipuram art has already been successfully adapted across a wide variety of mediums, including fabrics, canvas, discarded litchi wood, mehendi, lac bangles, umbrellas, crochet, sujini, chikankari, and even peda sweet art. Wax art represents the latest creative addition to this expanding portfolio.
New designs involving wax are currently in development, with their final innovations slated for public showcase soon. Preparations are also underway keeping the upcoming Raksha Bandhan festival in mind, with attractive wax designs being prepared specifically for gifting purposes. Looking ahead, there are further plans to craft human figures utilizing wax art techniques.
Thousands of individuals have already aligned themselves with the Lichipuram art movement. The overarching goal is to take Muzaffarpur litchi beyond a mere fruit and project it onto the national and international stage through art. Operating under the motto of Local Pride, Global Ride, the initiative strives to provide a solid platform to local artists and their talents while spreading a cheerful message to the community.
