A major leadership change is brewing at the Tata group. Noel Tata, who has steered Trent Limited for nearly three decades, is set to step down as chairman of the company. The reason is not a boardroom dispute or a business decision, but a strict in-house rule set by the Tata group itself, one that fixes an age limit at the top.
The Tata group is known not just as a business house but as a conglomerate that sets high standards and benchmarks in the way it operates. It follows a clear policy under which executive directors must retire at 65 and non-executive directors at 70. Noel Tata is currently 69 and will turn 70 this November. It is precisely this rule that will require him to vacate the Trent Limited chair next year.
The Announcement at the AGM
Noel Tata made the disclosure himself at the company's 47th Annual General Meeting on June 23. He told shareholders plainly that this was his final address as chairman. The pace the company gained under his watch is clear from one figure alone: Trent's revenue has now climbed to Rs 19,701 crore.
A Company His Mother Built
Noel Tata's association with Trent runs deep. He joined the Trent board as a director back in 1998. The company had been built by his mother, Simone Tata, after the divestment of Lakme. The very next year, in 1999, Noel took charge as Trent's first managing director.
From One Store to 1,200
Trent's story began with a single Westside store. Today it has grown into a vast network of 1,200 stores. Noel Tata described the journey as a fine example of evolution. He said the company had steadily strengthened its portfolio over the past few years and built a large network on the back of brands like Zudio and Star. Looking at the business so far, he said, it was clear that Trent's best performance was still to come, and that the opportunities lay not only in India but across the world.
The Goal to Grow Tenfold
At the 2023 shareholders' meeting, Noel Tata had set a target of making Trent ten times bigger. Since then, the company has grown 2.5 times in terms of revenue and profit. Noel expressed confidence that Trent would reach that milestone, but said the road ahead would now have to be travelled without him. Under his leadership, Trent's retail business flourished, and its stores have spread across the country.
