To overhaul regional transport infrastructure and fortify strategic connectivity across the Northeastern states, the central government has announced a massive multi-state highway plan. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari revealed the blueprint for a 630-kilometer-long corridor designed to seamlessly link Siliguri in West Bengal with Guwahati in Assam and Shillong in Meghalaya. The ambitious infrastructure undertaking will involve an estimated investment of around Rs 61,500 crore, aiming to significantly reduce commuting durations while providing resilient transit routes through vital border gateways.
Speaking at an official gathering in Assam and outlining details shared on social media, Gadkari highlighted that the expansive highway network will play a crucial role in accelerating economic growth, regional trade, and strategic logistics across the Northeast.
Rs 30000 Crore Allocated for 400 km Siliguri-Guwahati Stretch
The primary and longest component of the proposed corridor will span the 400-kilometer stretch between Siliguri and Guwahati. An expenditure of approximately Rs 30,000 crore has been earmarked for this phase, which will blend greenfield development with substantial capacity upgrades to existing national highways. The approval workflow for this section is currently progressing through official administrative channels.
This particular geographical segment holds critical geopolitical significance as it encompasses the narrow Siliguri Corridor, popularly referred to as the Chicken's Neck. Being the sole mainland transit route binding the Northeastern states to the rest of India, constructing a modern, high-capacity highway across this area will eliminate persistent transit bottlenecks and ensure uninterrupted supply chains during emergencies.
Guwahati-Shillong Commute to Be Reduced to One Hour
Under the project framework, authorities have planned an advanced greenfield highway extending from Jorabat near Guwahati directly to Barapani in Meghalaya. By bypassing circuitous hillside roads, this route will shrink the travel distance between the two commercial centers from roughly 100 kilometers down to 66 kilometers. Consequently, the travel time, which currently takes about two and a half hours, is projected to come down to approximately one hour once operational.
Shillong-Silchar Greenfield Link to Halve Journey Time
Another crucial artery in the master plan is a dedicated 165-kilometer greenfield highway linking Shillong with Silchar, the economic hub of Assam's Barak Valley. Travelers negotiating the existing 230-kilometer alignment currently spend upwards of 8 hours navigating congested terrain. The proposed highway is expected to cut the road distance significantly and reduce total transit time to about 4 hours. Officials plan to issue the formal work orders for this section in November.
Road Works Exceeding Rs 2 Lakh Crore Underway in Assam
Providing an overview of ongoing roadway modernization in Assam, the Union Minister outlined an extensive pipeline of central infrastructure investments. At present, 265 active projects covering approximately 4,700 kilometers are being executed across the state at an estimated capital cost of nearly Rs 2 lakh crore. Furthermore, the central government has lined up 31 new projects spanning 1,470 kilometers, which will require an additional financial outlay of around Rs 92,000 crore.
Linkage with Gorakhpur Expressway and Baihata Chariali-Tezpur Corridor
Long-distance connectivity between northern India and the Northeast will witness a major leap forward through proposed integration with the Gorakhpur-Siliguri expressway. By connecting that route to this newly planned 630-kilometer corridor, the government aims to establish a seamless transit spine running from Uttar Pradesh directly into Assam.
Complementing these inter-state connections, the Centre has additionally granted administrative approval for a 135.87-kilometer, four-lane access-controlled highway between Baihata Chariali near Guwahati and Tezpur. This independent project involves an estimated investment of Rs 8,970.20 crore, designed to ease intra-state vehicular movement across central Assam.
