Across the country, various welfare programs are implemented to uplift women and secure their financial future. Among these initiatives, specific state-backed programs stand out by transferring funds directly to women to foster self-reliance. One such prominent effort is underway in Odisha, where a major women-centric scheme has crossed significant milestones in disbursing financial aid to millions of eligible residents, helping them achieve independence and stability.
Fifth Installment Released on Raksha Bandhan
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Modi distributed the fifth installment of the welfare program to women across the state on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. More than one crore three lakh eligible women received five thousand rupees directly into their bank accounts through direct benefit transfers. The government spent over five thousand one hundred sixty-three crores on this specific installment alone. In Nayagarh district alone, over two lakh thirty-three thousand women received a substantial share of funds, demonstrating the widespread impact of the disbursement across urban and rural areas.
Empowerment Vision and Substantial Budget Allocation
State leadership emphasizes that the program goes far beyond mere financial relief, serving as a core symbol of women empowerment. The primary goal is to enable women to make independent decisions and become socially, politically, and economically self-sufficient. To sustain this vision, the state government has provisioned an annual expenditure of eleven thousand crores for the initiative. Furthermore, out of the total budget of three lakh ten thousand crores, nearly forty percent amounting to over one lakh twenty-two thousand crores has been designated for women-focused schemes, marking a historic budgetary commitment.
Annual Distribution Structure and Practical Utilization
Under the structure of the program, every eligible woman receives a total financial assistance of fifty thousand rupees distributed over a period of five years. The amount is disbursed in two installments of five thousand rupees each year, reaching beneficiaries every six months. Reports indicate that a vast majority of recipients have utilized the funds for long-term financial security. More than twenty-five percent of women have successfully initiated their own small businesses, ranging from dairy farming and tailoring to grocery shops, vegetable cultivation, and weaving.
Eligibility Criteria and Application Process
The benefits of the scheme are exclusively reserved for women who are not employed in formal jobs and do not receive a regular pension. Those who fall under standard government social security and economic support categories qualify for the assistance. To facilitate registration, the government has launched a dedicated online portal, while offline forms are made widely accessible through Anganwadi centers, block offices, and urban civic body offices. Essential requirements for application include an Aadhaar card, an active mobile number, bank account details, and other necessary verification documents.
