In a major development for India's domestic energy landscape, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has uncovered a fresh natural gas reserve in the deep waters off the Odisha coast. The energy discovery was made within an exploration well situated in the Mahanadi Offshore Basin. The state-run exploration firm officially shared the information regarding this breakthrough on September 18, 2026. The drilling operation was executed under the organization's dedicated deepwater exploration initiative named Samudra Manthan.
Drilling Parameters and Location in Mahanadi Basin
Technical data reveals that natural gas was tapped in the exploratory well designated as MN-DW18-1-H-D between the depths of 1441 and 1452 meters. The engineering crew had drilled the well down to its planned target depth of 1,623 meters. Located roughly 43 kilometers away from the coastal town of Konark, this structure represents the very first well drilled by ONGC under this targeted campaign in the Mahanadi Basin.
The proximity of the reservoir to the coastline offers distinct advantages for commercialization. Because the site is comparatively close to shore facilities, bringing the extracted fuel into market circulation could happen relatively fast. Nevertheless, establishing routine commercial operations will still depend on comprehensive appraisal studies and an economic assessment of the reservoir volume.
Project Timeline and Operational Oversight
The drilling drive for this deep-sea well was formally initiated on July 25, 2026, by Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri. Following the commencement, senior corporate executives visited the offshore site on August 27 to review project milestones. The visiting delegation featured ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh, Director of Technology and Field Services Vikram Saxena, and Director of Exploration OP Sinha.
These leadership members traveled to the drillship Platinum Explorer, where they inspected ongoing operations and engaged directly with the technical teams handling the complex drilling maneuvers in deep water, ensuring adherence to rigorous operational parameters.
Continuous Gas Flow and Financial Market Reaction
Technical reports indicate that the newly opened well has maintained a steady gas flow over three consecutive days. According to company assessments, both the delivery flow rate and underground reservoir pressure have exhibited highly encouraging metrics. This result provides substantial momentum to ONGC's ongoing deepwater exploration program while expanding the baseline of indigenous hydrocarbon reserves within Indian territorial waters.
Under the regulatory framework of PNG Rules, 2025, there is strong potential to integrate this strike with earlier nearby discoveries through shared production and transit infrastructure. Utilizing clustered subsea assets is expected to accelerate development timelines and streamline monetization of deepwater gas reserves. The milestone was greeted favorably by the financial markets, where ONGC shares climbed by 1.22% during Monday's trading session on the NSE to close at Rs 235.63 per share.
