In response to mounting price pressures, authorities in New Delhi have already initiated contingency plans to procure sugar through NAFED and arrange for its smooth retail distribution across various localities. Uttar Pradesh Holds Seven Months Worth of Sugar Reserves
While addressing an official appointment letter distribution event in the state capital Lucknow on Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding sugar availability. The Chief Minister firmly stated that despite talks of a looming scarcity in various parts, Uttar Pradesh faces absolutely no shortage of the commodity. Presenting official figures, he noted that while the monthly consumption of sugar within the state stands at a total of 4 lakh tonnes, authorities currently maintain a massive reserve of 28 lakh tonnes. This robust buffer effectively translates to a secure supply lasting for a full seven months.
Sugar Mills Set to Resume Operations from October 15
Elaborating on future production goals, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the state government is gearing up to restart operations across sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh starting October 15. Through the active functioning of these crushing units, the state aims to generate an additional 90 lakh tonnes, which amounts to 900 lakh quintals, of sugar. He emphasized that Uttar Pradesh possesses the industrial capability and capacity to not only comfortably sustain the demands of its own 25 crore residents but also holds the agricultural might to feed India's entire population of 140 crore. ISMA Assures Adequate Supplies Amid Price Volatility
Meanwhile, in the wake of sudden price escalations, industry body ISMA issued a significant statement on Monday affirming that the country faces no actual shortage of sugar. The organization expressed optimism that permitting duty-free imports alongside imposing stockholding limits on traders and bulk buyers would help moderate retail rates in the near future. However, according to PTI reports, retail market prices for sugar edged higher by approximately one rupee on Tuesday, reaching around 64 rupees per kilogram.
