Railway passengers traveling between Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are in for a major convenience boost. The railway administration has finalized a comprehensive plan to extend the currently operational Indore-Nagpur Vande Bharat Express all the way to Bilaspur. A formal proposal detailing this expansion has already been submitted to the Railway Board for final approval. Once the board grants its green light, commuters will no longer need to disembark at Nagpur station to catch a connecting train. At present, the Vande Bharat service operates exclusively between Indore and Nagpur, while a separate system handles the Nagpur-Bilaspur route. By combining these corridors, the railways aim to establish a direct, high-speed connection linking the Malwa region directly with Chhattisgarh.
Weekly Schedule and Proposed Timings
According to the draft operational plan, the extended train will run six days a week in both directions, remaining non-operational only on Saturdays. This schedule is designed to maintain robust superfast connectivity between the two states throughout the week. As per the proposed timetable, the Indore-Bilaspur Vande Bharat Express will depart from Indore at 6:10 AM and arrive in Nagpur at 2:05 PM. It will then leave Nagpur between 5:15 PM and 5:17 PM, passing through Durg to reach Bilaspur by 7:25 PM.
On the return journey, the Bilaspur-Indore Vande Bharat will start from Bilaspur at 6:45 AM, traveling via Raipur, Durg, and Gondia to reach Nagpur by approximately 12:30 PM to 12:35 PM. Continuing from Nagpur, the train is scheduled to arrive back in Indore at 8:25 PM. In both directions, the service will cover a total distance of roughly 1052 kilometers in a duration ranging between 14 hours 20 minutes and 14 hours 25 minutes.
Strategic Advantages for Trade and Commuters
Transportation experts note that this new routing will significantly improve travel efficiency compared to existing options like the Narmada Express, which takes considerably longer on the same path. Railway expert Nagesh Namjoshi recalled that when the Vande Bharat service was initially introduced between Indore and Bhopal, low initial occupancy left several seats vacant, prompting early suggestions to extend the route to Bilaspur. Although the train was initially extended only up to Nagpur, it has since maintained consistently high occupancy rates.
At present, the detailed route plan and schedule remain pending with the Railway Board. Official inauguration dates and finalized timetables will be published as soon as the board grants its clearance. Once operational, the direct rail link will tightly integrate Malwa with major Chhattisgarh hubs such as Bilaspur, Raipur, and Durg, providing a substantial boost to both business travelers and daily commuters.
