At the Fatehpur Agricultural Research Station, fruit species are now being researched through rigorous scientific methods. Following the plantation of Kesar mango varieties, a dedicated date palm orchard is currently being developed at the facility, which will streamline the identification of optimal fruit-bearing plants suited to the local climate and soil composition.
To establish this orchard, date palm saplings have been specially procured from Bikaner and brought to the Fatehpur Agricultural Research Station. Date palms are widely recognized as a crop that thrives exceptionally well in hot and dry weather conditions, making the Shekhawati region a promising candidate for its cultivation. To validate this potential, comprehensive studies will be conducted focusing on plant growth, fruiting patterns, overall yield, and water requirements, allowing researchers to accurately assess the suitability of date palms in this terrain.
Harphool Singh, the in-charge of the Fatehpur Agricultural Research Station, explained that the primary goal behind developing these orchards is not merely planting trees, but observing how different fruit species perform under local environmental factors. Aspects such as the impact of extreme summer and winter seasons, soil characteristics, irrigation availability, and plant productivity will be thoroughly examined. This analysis will help determine which fruit-bearing plants can prove most rewarding for farmers in Sikar and the surrounding districts.
He noted that with ongoing climate shifts, selecting the right crops and varieties has become more critical for farming than ever before. Identifying fruit plants that seamlessly adapt to the local weather can thus provide immense assistance to growers. Harphool Singh added that the trials conducted at the research facility will successfully isolate specific varieties capable of performing exceptionally well in alignment with the region's temperature range, water availability, and soil profile.
