Just days after stepping away from international cricket, veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane is set to begin a brand new chapter in his professional career. Having announced his retirement from international cricket on the morning of 30 July, Rahane will be participating in an overseas T20 league for the very first time. He has joined the Amsterdam Flames as a marquee player for the inaugural season of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL), which gets underway on 26 August. The franchise officially confirmed his signing on 7 August, marking a significant talent boost for the newly launched tournament.
Rahane’s Vision and Commitment to European Cricket
Reflecting on his decision to join the ETPL after retiring from international duties, Ajinkya Rahane emphasized his desire to contribute to the global growth of the sport. He stated, "Cricket has given me a lot, and I have always believed that players have a responsibility to give back to the sport." Rahane highlighted that cricket in Europe is entering a highly exciting phase packed with immense growth potential. He expressed how impressed he was by Amsterdam Flames' commitment to innovation both on and off the field. The former India player noted that he is thrilled to collaborate with the team management to build a winning franchise, inspire the upcoming generation of cricketers, and strengthen the long-term foundation of the sport across the continent. Steve Waugh’s Leadership and a Star-Studded Lineup
The Amsterdam Flames boast a formidable leadership setup behind the scenes. Former Australian captain and batting legend Steve Waugh serves as the co-founder and Chief Cricket Officer of the franchise, playing a central role in shaping the squad's philosophy. On the field, the team features a star-studded lineup of international T20 stars alongside Rahane. Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been appointed to captain the side. The roster also includes premier names such as Steve Smith, Tim David, and New Zealand’s Michael Bracewell, making the Flames one of the most competitive outfits in the competition.
Rahane’s T20 Statistics and Tournament Schedule
While Ajinkya Rahane established his reputation as one of Indian cricket's finest Test batters, his pedigree in short-format cricket is equally robust. Over the course of his career, Rahane has featured in 308 T20 matches, accumulating 7,968 runs at a solid average of 30.29. His T20 journey includes 56 half-centuries and 2 centuries, reflecting a wealth of experience that will add crucial stability and firepower to the Amsterdam Flames' batting lineup.
