Preparations for the 20th edition of the Indian Premier League, scheduled for 2027, have already begun picking up momentum, with the player auction slated to take place in Goa later this year. Following two consecutive seasons of underwhelming performances on the field, Chennai Super Kings have initiated an extensive overhaul of their support staff. In a major development, the franchise has parted ways with former Australian cricketer Mike Hussey, who had been serving as the team's batting coach. The call to release Hussey forms a pivotal part of the management's extensive restructuring initiative ahead of the 2027 campaign.
Mike Hussey's Coaching Stint That Began in 2018 Concludes
Mike Hussey shares a long and memorable association with Chennai Super Kings that stretches back to his days as an active player. After hanging up his boots, he transitioned into coaching and took up the mantle of batting coach in 2018 under former head coach Stephen Fleming. Hussey remained at the helm of the batting department through the previous season, overseeing a highly successful era marked by remarkable batting performances and competitive consistency. However, after the side endured dip in form across the last two seasons, the management decided it was time for a fresh approach, officially bringing his coaching tenure to a close.
Extensive Overhaul of Support Staff and Uncertainty Over James Foster
Hussey's exit is part of a broader shakeup running through the Chennai Super Kings dugout. Following the departure of Stephen Fleming from the head coach position, the franchise moved swiftly to appoint former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as the new head coach. To complement the leadership transition, Mohit Sharma was handed the responsibility of bowling coach. With Hussey now stepping aside, attention shifts toward who will be brought in to take charge of the batting division.
Meanwhile, the future of James Foster, who served as the fielding coach during the previous campaign, remains uncertain. The franchise has paused the decision to extend his tenure, strongly signaling that Chennai Super Kings are poised to field an entirely brand-new coaching staff when the tournament returns for its landmark 20th edition next year.
