Following India's unexpected defeat against Ireland in the opening fixture, cricket fans around the world have raised significant debates regarding the team's selection strategies. Many believe that if the rising young star Vaibhav Suryavanshi had been included in the playing XI, the outcome of the match could have been different. Amidst this rising controversy, former chief selector of the BCCI, Dilip Vengsarkar, has stepped forward to advocate for the young prodigy. Vengsarkar, who captained the national side in the 1980s, believes that Suryavanshi is a highly promising talent built for the long run.
A Legend's Endorsement for India's Future Star
Vengsarkar, who served as the chief selector between 2006 and 2008, was asked whether Suryavanshi should feature in the upcoming T20I series against England. In response, he highly praised the teenager's capabilities. With a career spanning 116 Test matches and 129 ODIs for India, Vengsarkar described him as an exceptional young talent who has already made a mark with his strong performances in the T20 format.
He expressed confidence that Suryavanshi's dynamic batting style will translate successfully into the longest format of the game, though he noted that observing his performance in Test cricket remains essential. Highlighting the technical evolution of the game, Vengsarkar pointed out that during his own formative years, batsmen were strictly coached to play within the 'V' and keep their shots grounded. Today, however, due to the rapid growth of diverse formats, players undergo highly specialized coaching styles to meet modern demands.
The Legacy of Making Bold Selection Calls
Vengsarkar's strong support for Suryavanshi brings back memories of his own revolutionary tenure as the selection committee chairman. Between 2006 and 2008, he initiated crucial transitions in the Indian cricket setup. He was famously the individual who stood up to senior management to advocate for the inclusion of a young Virat Kohli, a decision that eventually cost him his position as chairman. During this transitional period, Vengsarkar prioritised domestic performers, bringing several fresh faces into both the Test and ODI squads to secure the future of the team.
Anticipating the Big Debut in Belfast
The cricket community is now eagerly waiting to see when this 15-year-old sensation will finally secure his international debut. Having been left out of the playing XI during the first game against Ireland, where India suffered a 34-run defeat, questions are mounting. The second game of the series is scheduled for Sunday, June 28, at the same ground in Belfast. Should the management decide to bench him once again, Suryavanshi will look forward to the five-match T20 series scheduled to begin on July 1.
