Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel has secured significant legal relief after spending over a month behind bars in an alleged sexual assault case. A Chinsurah court ordered his release on bail following 36 days of detention, bringing a temporary respite to the young athlete whose professional sporting career recently came under intense legal scrutiny.
Allegations Leveled by Medical Student
The legal proceedings stem from a formal complaint filed by a medical student hailing from Karnataka. According to the complainant, she had been involved in a relationship with Porel for approximately three and a half years. The woman stated that during their courtship, the cricketer explicitly promised to marry her, and the pair also undertook overseas travel together. However, she alleged that Porel subsequently refused to honor his commitment to marriage, compelling her to seek police intervention.
Police Complaint at Mogra and High Court Order
The complainant lodged her grievance at the Mogra police station on June 23. Law enforcement authorities subsequently registered a formal case under Section 69, Section 311, Section 318, and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), alongside Section 66 and Section 72 of the Information Technology Act. As the proceedings gathered pace, the matter reached the Calcutta High Court, which issued direct instructions to the police to take Porel into custody, leading to his formal arrest on August 11.
Criminal Intimidation Claims and Gadget Seizure
The registered case extends beyond allegations of deceit-led sexual assault to encompass charges of criminal intimidation and other offenses. Taking note of concerns regarding the potential leaking or viral circulation of the complainant's private photographs and video recordings, the court had ordered investigating officials to immediately seize Porel's electronic gadgets to protect evidence and preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
