New Zealand's preparations for the five-match ODI series against India have suffered another severe setback just hours before the opening fixture. Star opening batter Devon Conway has been ruled out of the first clash after suffering a collision with teammate Matt Henry during an intense practice session on Tuesday. Conway was immediately taken off the field by medical personnel and subsequently admitted to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Mid-Air Collision During Fielding Drills in Practice
The incident occurred while the Black Caps were participating in an active training session ahead of the series opener. Both Devon Conway and fast bowler Matt Henry were tracking a high ball in an attempt to complete a catch when they accidentally collided with each other. The impact left both players grounded and requiring prompt medical intervention. Conway sustained a head injury from the impact and remains under medical observation in hospital. Henry also picked up an injury in the clash, but his condition is reported to be stable, keeping him in contention to play pending a final medical clearance.
Injury Wave Continues to Deplete New Zealand Squad
Conway's sudden withdrawal adds to an already extensive casualty list for the hosts. Just a day earlier on Monday, the squad lost both Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman, who were ruled out of the entire series. The team is also missing the services of William O'Rourke and Zak Foulkes due to existing fitness setbacks, alongside Ben Sears who had to step aside. With several frontline options across batting and bowling sidelined simultaneously, the New Zealand team management faces a difficult selection puzzle to patch together a competitive playing eleven.
Auckland Hosts Opener as India Steps Up Preparations
The opening encounter of the five-match rubber takes place on Wednesday, November 4, at Eden Park in Auckland. With both teams using this bilateral contest to assess combinations looking ahead toward the 2027 ODI World Cup, the stakes remain high. Meanwhile, the Indian contingent has already begun extensive preparations, with visuals and video footage capturing senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in serious training rhythm. All eyes will now be on how a heavily depleted New Zealand outfit responds to a formidable Indian challenge on home turf.
