Sri Lanka's men's cricket team has undergone a major leadership transition across the board. Following the sudden resignation of experienced all-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva, Sri Lanka Cricket announced that wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis has been appointed as the new Test captain. Mendis was already in charge of Sri Lanka's white-ball setups in both T20 and ODI cricket, meaning this latest appointment officially places him at the helm of the national side across all three international formats.
Stepping Aside to Empower the Next Generation
Dhananjaya de Silva's decision to relinquish the red-ball captaincy marks a notable turning point for Sri Lankan cricket. He communicated his choice directly through a letter addressed to the national selection committee. In that correspondence, de Silva stated his conviction that the leadership reins should now be handed over to the next generation of players. He originally took over the Test captaincy from Dimuth Karunaratne in January 2024.
Throughout his time in charge, de Silva led the national side in a total of 18 Test matches, steering them to victory on 7 occasions. However, the team has faced several challenging results over the past twelve months. Sri Lanka suffered a Test series defeat against the West Indies before encountering another series loss at home against India. Following those mixed results, Sri Lanka currently sits in seventh position on the World Test Championship standings table.
Individual Performance During Captaincy
Despite the challenges of steering the squad, Dhananjaya de Silva continued to make substantial individual contributions on the field. Across his tenure as captain, he accumulated 1,130 runs at an average of 36.45 while also claiming 9 wickets with the ball. Sri Lanka Cricket acknowledged and praised his dedicated service during this period.
Ashley de Silva, the chief executive officer of Sri Lanka Cricket, expressed gratitude on behalf of the administration, thanking the outgoing captain for his committed leadership in the longest format while wishing him success throughout the remainder of his playing career. De Silva also confirmed that while he is relinquishing captaincy responsibilities, he remains fully available for national team selection as a player moving forward.
Kusal Mendis Steps into the Red-Ball Role
All attention now shifts to 31-year-old Kusal Mendis, whose extensive international experience will be vital for the squad's stability. Mendis has represented Sri Lanka in 75 Test matches so far, amassing 4,836 runs at an average of 36.36. His red-ball record includes 10 centuries and 23 half-centuries. Having already taken charge of the ODI and T20 squads, Mendis now carries the full weight of guiding the team across every international format.
Upcoming Test Challenge in Rawalpindi
Mendis will not have to wait long for his first test of tactical leadership in the traditional format. His debut assignment as Sri Lanka's Test captain will be a two-match series against Pakistan away from home. The opening fixture of that tour is scheduled to begin on November 9 in Rawalpindi. Sri Lanka Cricket and supporters will be hoping that Mendis can guide the squad to a strong showing on Pakistani soil and help improve their standing in the World Test Championship cycle.
