The stage is set for the upcoming player auction of the fifth SA20 season, scheduled to take place on October 7. Organizers have finalized a condensed list of 156 players who will go under the hammer to contest the few remaining positions across franchises. With teams having already done considerable retention and pre-auction groundwork, just 19 vacant spots remain open across the entire league roster.
Roster Pruned from 789 Registrations to 156 Final Contenders
Initial interest in the fifth edition was massive, with 789 domestic and international cricketers throwing their names into the registration ring. Tournament officials systematically trimmed that extensive list down to 156 contenders. Within this final auction catalogue, 95 cricketers hail from South Africa, alongside 61 overseas international professionals. Despite the large assortment of available talent, opportunities will be fiercely competitive because only four of the six franchises require reinforcements to complete their squads.
Team Balances and Financial Purse Breakdown
Two franchises, Paarl Royals and Durban's Super Giants, have already filled their 19-man squads, meaning neither team will participate in the bidding on October 7. The remaining four sides have a combined collective spending purse of 2.11 million US dollars. MI Cape Town and Joburg Super Kings enter the event with the heaviest recruitment workload, needing six players each. Pretoria Capitals have five empty berths to fill, while reigning titleholders Sunrisers Eastern Cape need only two additions to round out their defense campaign.
Spotlight on Faf du Plessis and South African Core
The headline name among South African talent is 42-year-old veteran batter Faf du Plessis, who previously captained Joburg Super Kings. Remaining a prolific force across global franchise cricket, du Plessis recently finished as the leading run-scorer in the concluded ETPL season. During the previous SA20 campaign, his participation was cut short by a fractured thumb, restricting him to just five games in which he struck 135 runs at a brisk strike rate of 151.7. Joining him in the primary domestic group are established Proteas figures including Rassie van der Dussen, all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, and fast bowler Nandre Burger.
Under-23 Prospects and Global Overseas Presence
Bidding dynamics will also focus closely on the two mandated slots designated for Under-23 players. Fast bowler Matthew Boast, who shared the honor of being the joint-most expensive acquisition in the Season 2 auction, returns in this bracket alongside former South Africa Under-19 team captain Jason Raubenheimer. The international selection is heavily reinforced with seasoned T20 match-winners, featuring Trent Boult, Kieron Pollard, Shimron Hetmyer, Shamar Joseph, and Mohammad Nabi. Additional overseas options include rising Afghan talent AM Ghazanfar, alongside English players Jordan Cox, Aneurin Donald, leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, and fast bowler Richard Gleeson.
