The 42-year-old replaces Yere Goud at the helm. Joining Vinay Kumar in the new support staff lineup is former Karnataka batter Deepak Chougule, who has been appointed as the team's fielding coach. The state side will open their Ranji Trophy 2026-27 campaign on October 11, when they face off against Andhra in their season opener. Prior to taking up this head coach role, Vinay Kumar was actively involved on the field, leading the Hubli Tigers as captain in the ongoing Maharaja T20 Trophy.

Vinay Kumar brings a wealth of playing experience to the dressing room, underscored by a legendary domestic career. Having announced his retirement from all forms of international and domestic cricket in 2021, his numbers in red-ball cricket remain among the finest in Indian domestic history. Over the course of 139 First-Class matches, he bagged an impressive total of 504 wickets. More notably, Vinay Kumar still holds the record for taking the highest number of wickets by a pace bowler in the history of the Ranji Trophy, with 442 scalps to his credit.
At the international level, Vinay Kumar represented Team India across all three formats of the game. He featured in 1 Test match, where he picked up 1 wicket. In the 50-over format, he represented the nation in 31 One Day Internationals, claiming 38 wickets.
