A wave of disappointment has swept through Sahaspur Alinagar following the announcement by star Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami that he is retiring from Test cricket. Cricket enthusiasts and local residents in his native village feel that the experienced pacer should not have stepped away from the red-ball format just yet, believing he still had plenty of cricket left in him to serve the country for a longer period. Praising his illustrious sporting journey, villagers noted that Mohammed Shami has brought immense pride to both the nation and his hometown through his sheer hard work and stellar performances.
Reactions from Sahaspur Alinagar
Residents of Sahaspur Alinagar in Amroha district shared their sentiments regarding the sudden development. Local resident Raja Ramपाल recalled how Mohammed Shami delivered exceptional performances and picked up numerous wickets during the recent World Cup, sparking immense joy across Amroha. While acknowledging that only Mohammed Shami knows the exact reasons behind his retirement, Ramपाल and fellow villagers expressed a strong desire to see him get an opportunity to play in the 2027 World Cup. They described him as the pride of India and Amroha, confident that whenever he gets the chance, his lethal bowling will continue to elevate the nation's stature.
Ties to the Village and Youth Inspiration
Mohammad Kamil mentioned that while the exact reasons for the retirement remain unknown to them, Mohammed Shami always interacted with villagers in a simple and down-to-earth manner whenever he visited home. There had been no prior discussion regarding stepping away from the game. Another local resident, Kishanpal, reiterated that the choice was entirely personal, yet wished that Mohammed Shami would be given another opportunity to play the 2027 World Cup and bring further glory to the village. Pushpendra Pal added that young people in the village look up to him as a role model, which is why many felt he should have continued playing Test matches longer. Shahid Hasan and Chandrapal echoed similar thoughts, emphasizing his superb bowling abilities and the honor he brought to the region.
Pending Stadium Construction Demand
Local residents also brought up a key local initiative, recalling that when Mohammed Shami was starring in the World Cup, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced a major gift for Sahaspur Alinagar by deciding to build a stadium. Preparations for that project had begun, but construction has stalled for various reasons. The villagers have earnestly requested that the stadium be completed as soon as possible so that the local youth can shape their futures and bring further recognition to the village.
A Remarkable 13-Year Test Career
Mohammed Shami concluded his 13-year Test career after featuring in a total of 64 matches and claiming 229 wickets. His bowling average during this tenure stood at 27.71. Throughout his red-ball journey, he registered five-wicket hauls in an innings 6 times and picked up four wickets in an innings on 12 occasions, with his career-best figures being 6 for 56. Mohammed Shami made his Test debut against the West Indies on November 6, 2013, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, while his final Test appearance came in June 2023 during the World Test Championship final against Australia. Notably, Mohammed Shami will continue to represent the country in ODI and T20 formats.
