Making a memorable impression during a maiden appearance is a cherished dream for every professional cricketer. Afghanistan top-order batsman Rahmatullah accomplished precisely that by slamming a century in his debut Test match against Zimbabwe. Playing in the ongoing fixture at Sharjah, he reached the three-figure mark by facing 156 deliveries.
Joining a rare debut feat
With this remarkable knock, Rahmatullah became only the second batsman for Afghanistan to register a century on debut across any international format. The previous instance was recorded by Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who created a sensation in 2021 by scoring a century on his ODI debut against Ireland. Together, Gurbaz in ODIs and Rahmatullah in Tests have etched their names into the nation's cricketing history books.
A stellar partnership with Sediqullah
Aside from Rahmatullah, Sediqullah Atal also completed his century during the course of this match against Zimbabwe. This marked the second Test century for Sediqullah in just his fourth appearance for the national side. Opening the batting, Sediqullah not only notched up his own hundred but also provided stellar support to his partner. Afghanistan had suffered an early setback by losing their opening wicket at a mere score of 14, but Sediqullah and Rahmatullah weathered the storm and stitched together an unbroken 205-run partnership stretching through the lunch break on the third day.
Zimbabwe's first innings total
Batting first in the match, the Zimbabwe team put up a formidable total of 504 runs on the scoreboard. Brendan Taylor and Brian Bennett both starred with centuries for the visiting side. Taylor played an aggressive knock of 131 runs from 168 balls, while Bennett contributed 128 runs off 206 deliveries. Furthermore, Wesley Madhevere chipped in with 55 runs and Tafadzwa Tsiga added 44 runs to help propel their side into a commanding position.
