The ICC Women’s T20 Cup 2026 witnessed a major upset as defending champions New Zealand saw their campaign come to an abrupt end during the group stages. Hosts England continued their impressive run by defeating New Zealand by 9 wickets, marking their fifth consecutive victory. With this win, England concluded their group-B stage at the top of the table without losing a single match, securing their place in the semifinals. Remarkably, West Indies also managed to qualify for the final four, despite suffering a loss to Ireland in their final group match. This fixture also marked the final international appearance for three iconic New Zealand players, Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates, and Lea Tahuhu.

English bowlers take control

In the match held at The Oval in London, New Zealand batted first and posted a total of 163 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their 20 overs. The team maintained a steady start and reached 44 runs without losing a wicket by the end of the powerplay. Captain Amelia Kerr played a crucial innings of 42 runs, while Sophie Devine accelerated the scoring by hitting 30 runs off just 14 deliveries. However, England shifted the momentum of the game by claiming three wickets within a span of four balls without conceding a single run. Danielle Gibson delivered two vital blows, leaving New Zealand in trouble at 70/3. Brooke Halliday contributed 20 runs and Devine added 54 runs off 25 balls to stabilize the innings, but the batting order collapsed shortly after both were dismissed. Ultimately, Maddy Green remained unbeaten on 17, while Suzie Bates contributed 19 runs, helping New Zealand reach the 163-run mark.

For England, Danielle Gibson emerged as the most successful bowler, claiming two wickets, while Lauren Bell secured one. Chasing a target of 164, the English side adopted an aggressive approach from the start. Although Amy Jones was dismissed after scoring 17 runs, Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Sophia Dunkley effectively neutralized any hopes of a New Zealand comeback.

Danni Wyatt shines with the bat

Danni Wyatt-Hodge delivered a masterclass, hitting her third fifty of the tournament with an unbeaten 89 off 53 deliveries. Her innings was decorated with 15 boundaries and a six. At the other end, Sophia Dunkley provided excellent support, scoring an unbeaten 49 off 38 balls. The duo built a partnership of over 100 runs for the second wicket, guiding England to their target in just 17.2 overs. This victory solidified England's perfect group stage record while confirming New Zealand's exit from the tournament. Meanwhile, despite their defeat against Ireland, the New Zealand loss paved the way for the West Indies to secure their spot in the semifinals.
