India pulled off a commanding 6-wicket win over England in the first ODI at Edgbaston, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Put in to bat, England were bowled out for 258 by India's bowlers. Chasing 259 to win, India got there with overs to spare, reaching 262 for the loss of just 4 wickets in 45.2 overs.
A much-needed turnaround after a rough start to the tour
The win came as a huge relief for the Indian side, which had endured nothing but disappointment on this tour before this match. India had lost the T20I series against Ireland 0-2, and then suffered an even heavier 0-4 defeat in the T20I series against England. Against that backdrop, winning the very first match of the ODI series gave the team a massive confidence boost and marked its first victory of the tour.
Shubman's 80 laid the foundation before injury cut short his innings
Captain Shubman played a superb innings of 80 runs off 75 balls, giving India's chase a solid base. However, he had to leave the field retired hurt after picking up a leg injury during his innings, which briefly caused concern in the Indian camp. Even so, his knock had already put India in a strong position to close out the chase.
Axar Patel and Washington Sundar finished the job
With Shubman off the field, the responsibility of completing the chase fell on Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, and the pair delivered. Axar Patel remained unbeaten on 57 to steer India home, while Washington Sundar stayed not out on 52 and saw the innings through to the finish. Axar Patel also impressed with the ball earlier in the match, and his all-round contribution made him the standout performer of the game.
England lose at Edgbaston in ODIs for the first time in 11 years
India's win also brought an end to a long-standing record England had held at Edgbaston. The hosts suffered their first ODI defeat at this venue since 2015. Interestingly, the last team to beat England in an ODI at Edgbaston before this was also India, who achieved the feat back in 2014.
India's sixth straight win over England, eyes now on Cardiff
With this victory, India also recorded their sixth consecutive ODI win over England, the longest winning streak the team has ever had against England in any format. Previously, India's best streak against England in ODIs stood at 5 consecutive wins. The second match of the three-match series will now be played on 16 July in Cardiff, where India will look to seal the series while England will be aiming for a fightback.
