A depleted Indian line-up took the field for the three-match one-day international series against the West Indies, as a separate contingent led by captain Shreyas Iyer was away competing in the Asian Games. This absence of regular first-choice players opened the door for Ruturaj Gaikwad, whom the selectors drafted into the squad and entrusted with a spot in the starting eleven across all three fixtures. Despite enjoying consistent opportunities, the top-order batter struggled to produce an impactful contribution. After remaining unbeaten in lower-intensity situations during the opening two fixtures, he was presented with prime batting conditions and ample overs in the final match, yet failed to construct a substantial score. His underwhelming returns have now raised serious doubts about his longevity in India's 50-over setup.
Limited Outings Across a Four-Year ODI Span
Gaikwad earned his maiden one-day international cap back in 2022. Over the nearly four years that followed, appearances in the national blue have been sparse, restricting him to just 12 ODIs in total. Across those sporadic outings, he has accumulated 329 runs, a record highlighted by a single century and two half-centuries. The recent assignment against the West Indies produced only one fifty-plus score from his blade. During the series opener, he walked off unbeaten on 13 runs, following that up with an undefeated 31 in the second fixture. In both of those initial matches, match conditions left him with minimal scope to influence the overall outcome.
Squandered Opportunity in the Series Finale
The tactical scenario shifted dramatically in the third match, where early dismissals brought Gaikwad to the crease with plenty of overs remaining. It offered him an ideal platform to anchor the innings, construct a match-defining score, and cement his claims for future tours. Instead, he departed early without troubling the scorers significantly, ending the three-match bilateral series with a disappointing aggregate of 101 runs. In a national system marked by intense competition for every batting slot, failing to capitalize on such pivotal platforms severely weakens a player's standing.
Uphill Task Ahead of the New Zealand Tour
With the 50-over leg concluded, India now heads into a five-match T20 international contest against the West Indies, an assignment from which Gaikwad has been omitted. The one-day squad will not assemble again until November 4, leaving roughly a month of preparation before touring New Zealand for a series on their home soil. Gaikwad faces slim prospects of retaining his squad place for that away tour, especially with Shreyas Iyer expected to return and assume his regular batting duties. How long Gaikwad must wait for another opening in India's ODI setup remains a major question mark.
