Great expectations often surround prodigies in Indian cricket, but legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar has cautioned against rushing teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi into leadership responsibilities. Following Suryavanshi's appointment as vice-captain in the prestigious Duleep Trophy, Tendulkar expressed that assigning captaincy duties to a 15-year-old is premature and could detract from his core skill development.
Sachin Tendulkar Weighs in During Reddit Session
Addressing fans during a Q&A interaction on Reddit, Sachin Tendulkar responded to a query regarding the young batter being handed a leadership role so early in his career. A supporter inquired about Tendulkar's opinion on making Suryavanshi vice-captain at just 15 years of age. Replying to the fan, Tendulkar urged patience and recommended a step-by-step progression for the talented youngster.
Tendulkar highlighted that the focus ought to remain on building match practice rather than leadership pressures. He stated, "I feel it is too early for him to be vice-captain in the Duleep Trophy." The iconic cricketer further emphasized that Suryavanshi should be given ample opportunities to play more red-ball matches, allowing him to adapt to the rigorous demands of multi-day cricket before taking on tactical duties.
Breaking Age Records and Taking Tactical Charge
Sachin Tendulkar previously held the record for being the youngest player to debut for the Indian national team, stepping onto the international stage at 16 years and 205 days. However, Vaibhav Suryavanshi broke this longstanding record by making his debut at 15 years and 99 days. Despite his limited experience, the youngster has established several records in junior and domestic cricket.
When the selectors named him vice-captain of the East Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, it raised eyebrows in the domestic circuit. Suryavanshi, who had featured in just 8 red-ball matches for Bihar, was handed the leadership role over seasoned campaigner Abhimanyu Easwaran, who boasts an experience of over 100 first-class matches. During the tournament, when regular skipper Ishan Kishan was forced off the field due to an injury, Suryavanshi briefly assumed on-field captaincy for East Zone, actively making critical tactical calls including Decision Review System (DRS) referrals.
Rising Contender for the National Opening Slot
With his explosive strokeplay, Suryavanshi has drawn comparisons to top-order legends early in his career. He has quickly emerged as a serious contender for an opening spot in India's T20 International setup.
The competition for the top order in limited-overs cricket remains fiercely intense, with Suryavanshi competing alongside established names such as Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan. While his rapid rise has captivated cricket enthusiasts, seasoned experts like Tendulkar maintain that nurturing his fundamental batting skills in longer formats should take precedence over fast-tracking him into captaincy roles.
