The inspiring journey of Urmila Kumari Choudhary, a young girl from a remote village in Rajasthan who dared to dream of making a mark in the world of cricket, stands as a powerful testament to grit, passion, and relentless struggle. Hailing from Positara village in the Reodar sub-division of Sirohi district, Urmila chose to challenge a regressive mindset where sports fields are still not easily accessible or deemed suitable for young girls. While she faced harsh taunts from locals for playing cricket and her family initially feared social backlash, Urmila firmly kept hold of her wicketkeeping gloves and stood her ground on the pitch.
Inspired by the iconic wicketkeeping skills of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Urmila embarked on her cricketing journey and has spent the last four years putting in rigorous hard work into the sport. To take her aspirations to a professional level, she is currently receiving specialized training at a cricket academy in Pune. Remarkably, despite training far away from home, her deep connection with her roots remains intact. Urmila has already represented Sirohi in district-level tournaments and played crucial matches for her district team in Jaipur and Alwar. She also showcased her cricketing prowess during the Challengers Trophy held in June 2024.

Recalling how her association with the sport began, Urmila shares that she developed an interest in cricket while studying in the 11th grade. She used to watch cricket matches on television with her maternal aunt's son. During those broadcasts, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's exceptional wicketkeeping agility and style left the deepest impression on her. Witnessing Dhoni's sharp reflexes and command behind the stumps inspired her to carve out a path in cricket. Her journey started with college-level tournaments. Gradually, what began as a hobby transformed into a true passion, leading her to start regular practice sessions. For the past four years, Urmila has been sweating it out on the field consistently.
Overcoming the Obstacles of Rural Mindsets
For Urmila, the journey on the cricket field was minor compared to the battle she had to fight against prevailing societal perceptions. In the traditional rural environment, locals subjected her to various taunts upon seeing her play cricket. Remarks were made suggesting that girls should stick to cutting grass and handling cattle dung rather than playing cricket, even questioning who would marry a girl who plays the sport. Initially, her family was also swayed by these opinions and opposed her cricketing pursuits. However, she refused to give up. By citing the example of girls playing football in the nearby village of Udwaria, she convinced her family that daughters can excel in the realm of sports.
Family Support and Unshakable Determination
The very family that once worried about societal gossip is today Urmila's strongest pillar of support. To advance her ambitions, she is undergoing professional training at a Pune cricket academy while continuing to represent the Sirohi district team in various competitions. Urmila states that cricket is not merely a game for her, but a medium to establish her own identity. Her ultimate dream is to bring glory to Sirohi and Rajasthan. She firmly asserts that she will never leave the cricket ground, even after marriage. Urmila's narrative serves as a beacon of hope for countless girls who are forced to abandon their aspirations due to societal chains and orthodox barriers. She has demonstrated that with strong intentions, taunts can be answered on the field and orthodox norms can be stumped out like a wicket.
