Sri Lanka Cricket Appeals to ICC for More Test Matches Against England and Australia

Sri Lanka Cricket interim committee head Eranga Wickramaratne has urged the ICC to revise the Future Tours Programme so that the team can secure more Test series against powerhouses like India, England, and Australia.

In Colombo, Sri Lanka Cricket interim committee president Erran Wickremaratne has put forward vital suggestions aimed at bolstering the longest format of the game. Wickremaratne emphasized the pressing need for structural revisions in the International Cricket Council Future Tours Programme to ensure that the Sri Lankan national team gets more opportunities to play extended Test series against top-tier cricketing nations like India, England, and Australia.

The Sri Lankan side took to the field against West Indies in June and July for a two-match Test series following a gap of nearly a full year, and the team is presently engaged in a two-match Test series against India. Looking ahead at the remainder of the calendar year, Sri Lanka has six more Test matches lined up, which feature two away Tests each against Pakistan and New Zealand, alongside a two-match home series against South Africa.

The Push for More Matches Against Elite Teams

Addressing the media, Wickremaratne noted that current international scheduling constraints prevent the side from playing an adequate volume of Test cricket, even though this remains the format where the squad is eager to excel. Because bilateral tours are strictly governed by the existing Future Tours Programme cycle, the board remains hopeful of securing extended tours to India during the upcoming championship cycle.

He added that officials have heard reports of additional tours being integrated into the subsequent cycle, keeping expectations high within the board. Naturally, India, England, and Australia are the outfits every global board wants to face on the pitch, and Sri Lanka wants to guarantee that it earns trips to these territories. Wickremaratne strongly advocated for a much fairer balance within upcoming international cricket itineraries.

T20 and ODI Congestion in the Calendar

Highlighting the impact of shorter formats, Wickremaratne pointed out that better balance is essential for the health of the game. The team is scheduled to play 10 Test matches presently, yet the side has barely played any red-ball cricket so far this year, prompting the need to re-evaluate the Future Tours Programme and explore ways to improve overall scheduling.

He remarked that Twenty20 and 50-over cricket formats have heavily congested the modern sporting calendar, yet Sri Lanka specifically desires regular fixtures against India due to the reality of financial reliance and the fact that India stands as the absolute economic powerhouse of the sport. In this context, Wickremaratne expressed optimism that recent discussions held alongside ICC President Jay Shah and BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia will yield constructive and positive outcomes.
