Indian opening batsman Sanju Samson has experienced a roller-coaster run of form during the ongoing T20 series, oscillating between explosive knocks and cheap dismissals. A peculiar trend has emerged across the four matches played so far in the series against West Indies: whenever Sanju has scored runs, India has ended up on the losing side, whereas victories have come in matches where he failed to fire. With the series finely balanced, all eyes are now set on the final showdown to determine the ultimate winner.
Recapping the First Four Matches and Samson's Knocks
The five-match T20 series between India and West Indies stands level at two wins apiece. The decisive fifth match is scheduled for October 17, and the victorious side will claim the series trophy. Reviewing the matches so far, Sanju managed only 11 runs in the opening fixture, which India comfortably won by 8 wickets. However, in the second match, he bounced back in spectacular fashion, smashing 82 runs off just 41 balls with the help of 9 fours and 4 sixes. Despite his heroics, West Indies chased down the target to win by 6 wickets.
Series Tied Up After Mixed Results
In the third encounter of the series, Sanju fell cheaply for just 3 runs, but India still managed to secure a 14-run victory. The momentum shifted again in the fourth match, where Sanju exploded for 56 runs from a mere 23 deliveries, hitting 6 fours and 4 sixes. Unfortunately for India, the team fell short by 24 runs, allowing West Indies to level the series.
Selection Dilemma Ahead of the Decider
It certainly feels like sheer misfortune that Sanju's impactful knocks have coincided with team defeats. As the series moves towards its climax, a major question looms over whether Sanju will retain his spot in the starting lineup or if Vaibhav Suryavanshi will be given a chance. Vaibhav has not featured in the playing eleven during any of the previous matches. It remains to be seen what decision captain Shreyas Iyer and the team management will make for such a high-stakes series decider.
