Actress Poonam Pandey has spoken out in support of producer Ekta Kapoor's recent remarks regarding religious identity and public prejudice, stressing that personal devotion must not be conflated with professional life. Addressing ongoing cultural and political developments, she called out the tendency to judge an individual's spiritual values through the lens of their career or clothing. She also weighed in on public demonstrations across the country, calls for constitutional resignations, and the recent notice served to actor Imran Khan directing him to exit India.
Faith Beyond Wardrobe and Public Image
The discussion follows comments made by Ekta Kapoor during a podcast, where the producer revealed that wearing a tilak and religious sacred threads often drew uncomfortable looks from people, with some individuals even labeling her a practitioner of occult rituals. Responding to that incident, Poonam Pandey expressed agreement with Kapoor's critique of how people view Indian mythology and visible symbols of faith, questioning why following one's cultural heritage should invite scrutiny.
Drawing from her personal experiences, Pandey explained that whenever she visits temples, onlookers frequently react with surprise and pass judgment because of her bold public persona. She pointed out that people routinely question why someone known for wearing revealing clothes would go to a place of worship. Pushing back firmly against such assumptions, Pandey stated that she is a devoted Hindu who knows the Hanuman Chalisa by heart. She maintained that no one has the right to link an individual's career choices to their spiritual practices, asking why her temple visits should ever be treated as unusual.
Concerns Over Street Clashes and Violence
Turning her attention to the demonstrations organized by the Cockroach Janata Party, Pandey expressed deep concern over the pattern of street unrest. She observed that protests across various parts of the country have led to injuries among both students and police personnel, emphasizing that individuals on both sides of the barricades have families waiting for them at home. In her assessment, recurring hostility reflects a growing lack of empathy that poses serious risks to the nation's social fabric.
Pandey cautioned that citizens joining public demonstrations must fully comprehend the core reasons behind the agitation and know precisely what demands are being placed before authorities. Participating without clarity, she argued, only contributes to hostility. She insisted that humanity, empathy, and constructive dialogue must take precedence over aggression during public rallies.
Disputes Surrounding Resignations and Political Agitation
Addressing the specific demands raised by demonstrators regarding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Pandey criticized the casual nature of escalating political slogans. She pointed out that some individuals have even begun demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi without possessing complete facts or understanding the broader context. Emphasizing the gravity and constitutional importance of the Prime Minister's office, she noted that arbitrarily demanding high-level resignations trivializes governance.
These developments stem from the Cockroach Janata Party's demonstration call at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on October 10 against SIR, alongside their push for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Similar gatherings took place at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on the same day. Police detained several participants during these events, sparking a major dispute over official permissions and the subsequent arrest of political leaders involved in organizing the gatherings.
Advice to Imran Khan on Domestic Political Participation
Pandey also commented on the recent administrative directive requiring actor Imran Khan to leave India by October 28. Khan had participated in the October 10 protest at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai, after which Mumbai Police issued him a formal notice ordering his departure on grounds of holding American citizenship.
While expressing admiration for Khan's artistic work and affirming her respect for him as an actor, Pandey advised caution regarding his public actions. She suggested that as a foreign citizen holding an American passport, he should refrain from interfering in domestic Indian affairs. She remarked that the local landscape already contains substantial political friction and that many participants in street protests do not even fully understand the issues being contested, making outside involvement unnecessary.
