Indian cricket team etched its name in the record books by pulling off the highest successful run chase in its T20 history during a match in New Zealand. Batting first on October 22 at Hagley Oval, New Zealand posted a formidable total of 225 for the loss of four wickets. In response, India crossed the finish line with six wickets to spare, powered by impressive innings from Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, and Naman Dhir, thereby scripting a new chapter in national cricket history. The second match of the five-match T20 series is scheduled to be played at the same venue on October 24.
Sanju Samson and Naman Dhir fuel the successful chase
Chasing a daunting target of 226 runs, Sanju Samson provided India with an explosive start at the top of the order. Partnering with Abhishek Sharma, who scored 29 runs off 12 balls, Samson helped rack up a 93-run partnership in just 5.5 overs. Samson played a blistering knock of 67 runs from 33 deliveries at a strike rate of 203.03, dispatching eight boundaries and four maximums. Middle-order contributions from Shreyas Iyer, who added 42 runs, alongside an unbeaten 42-run blitz from Naman Dhir, ensured India overhauled the target and sealed a memorable victory.
Glen Phillips destructive knock goes in vain for the hosts
Earlier in the match, New Zealand capitalized on explosive batting from Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips to equal their highest-ever T20 total against India. This also marked New Zealand's highest-ever score on home turf. Allen contributed 45 runs from 24 balls, while Phillips anchored the innings with an unbeaten 82 off 40 deliveries. A brisk 31-run cameo from Bevan Jacobs off 16 balls propelled the hosts past the 200-run mark. Among Indian bowlers, Axar Patel endured a difficult outing, conceding 51 runs across his four overs. The hosts plundered 67 runs in the final five overs, exposing gaps in the visiting bowling attack.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar concedes 49 runs in international comeback
Returning to international cricket after an absence of nearly four years, fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar had a challenging outing. Although he started with a tidy opening over, Tim Seifert targeted him in the subsequent spell, hitting two boundaries and a towering six over long-on during an over that yielded 17 runs. Seifert finished with 24 runs from 17 balls. Bhuvneshwar failed to provide a major breakthrough for the team, giving away 14 runs in his third over. Entrusted with bowling the 20th and final over of the innings, he conceded another 14 runs. Overall, Bhuvneshwar finished with figures of wicketless 49 runs from his four allotted overs.
