Explosive Indian cricket team opener Abhishek Sharma delivered a sensational performance in the first T20 International of the five-match series against New Zealand, rewriting the record books with his fearless batting. Although his knock was relatively brief at 29 runs, it was packed with staggering milestones that no other batsman in world cricket has achieved so far. From the moment he stepped onto the field, he made his intentions clear by dispatching the very first delivery he faced over the ropes, continuing his aggressive onslaught for as long as he was at the crease.
Setting a World Record for First-Ball Sixes in T20 Internationals
The series opener saw New Zealand bat first and post a formidable total of 225 runs. As India began their chase, openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma walked out to the middle. While Samson took the initial strike, Abhishek wasted no time when he faced his first delivery, immediately launching it for a maximum. With this shot, he became the leading batsman in T20 International history for hitting the most sixes off the very first ball of his innings. He surpassed Afghanistan player Shafiqullah Shafaq, who achieved the feat six times in his career. Abhishek has now claimed the record outright by accomplishing this milestone seven times. India's Suryakumar Yadav stands behind them with five such instances.
Surpassing Rohit Sharma for Powerplay Sixes
Abhishek's record-breaking spree did not stop there, as he also eclipsed former captain Rohit Sharma to claim another major honor. He is now the leading batsman in T20 Internationals for hitting the highest number of sixes inside the powerplay, covering the first six overs of an innings. Rohit Sharma had smashed 98 sixes in the powerplay during his illustrious career, but Abhishek has now taken his tally to 99 sixes. He stands just one hit away from touching the historic 100-six mark in the powerplay, a feat untouched by any other batter globally.
Blazing Knock of 29 Runs Guides India to Victory
During his stay at the crease, Abhishek blasted 29 runs from just 12 deliveries, hitting two boundaries and three towering sixes in the process. When he departed as India's first wicket in the sixth over, the team scoreboard already read 93 runs. Fueled by this blistering start from the openers, India successfully chased down New Zealand's target of 226 runs with two balls to spare, claiming an early lead in the series.
