The journey of rising from a remote and economically challenged background to representing one's nation on the international stage is the ultimate sporting dream. For 21-year-old Razaullah, hailing from the small, secluded village of Wari in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, this dream became a reality. Blessed with the ability to bowl at extreme pace and power the ball over the boundary ropes as a lower-order batsman, he made a sensational entry into the cricketing world. His hometown of Wari lies adjacent to Lower Dir, the region that famously produced teenage pace sensation Naseem Shah in 2019. Driven by a similar passion, Razaullah relocated to the city of Mardan along with his two elder brothers to seek professional training and build a career in cricket.
The Sacrifice of a Brother and the Mardan Cricket Academy
A central figure in Razaullah's rise is his eldest brother, Samiullah, who worked tirelessly as a truck loader to support the family. Having lived through severe financial hardships, Samiullah was determined to ensure his younger brother did not end up doing manual labor for a living. Recognizing Razaullah's tall, athletic, and robust build, Samiullah made it his mission to enroll him in a proper cricket academy in Mardan. This selflessness and hard work from his brother provided the foundational support that eventually paved the way for Razaullah's entry into competitive cricket.
An Unforgettable Trial in Oversized Spikes
In 2023, Razaullah arrived at the selection trials for the Under-19 team under challenging circumstances, wearing spiked cricket shoes that were far too large for his feet, highlighting his humble beginnings. However, his physical limitations did not hinder his performance. As he ran in and delivered his very first ball, the sheer velocity of the delivery stunned everyone present. Ahmad Saeed, the academy coach for Mardan and Abbottabad, recalled that the delivery was so menacingly fast that it caused the batsman at the crease to lose his footing and struggle. Fearing that the raw, untrained bowler might seriously injure the batsman, coach Saeed immediately instructed Razaullah to stop bowling and did not allow him to deliver a second ball during that session.
The Obsession with the Rawalpindi Express
Within the training facilities of Mardan, Razaullah had only one goal in mind, to replicate the thunderous bowling speeds of legendary Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar. His admiration for the 'Rawalpindi Express' was so intense that during the National T20 Cup, he stubbornly demanded jersey number 14, the iconic number worn by Akhtar. Even though the jersey handed to him was two sizes too large, the young bowler wore it with immense pride. His bowling style and absolute dedication to pace earned him the nickname 'Shobi' among his peers at the academy.
The Journey to PSL and the National Team Call-up
Razaullah's extraordinary talent was quickly noticed on a larger scale. During a local T20 tournament held in Quetta, former Pakistan coach Abdul Rehman spotted the young fast bowler's raw pace. Recognizing his potential, Rehman immediately drafted him into the Rawalpindi team for the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Following his impressive stint in the tournament, Razaullah moved to the National High Performance Center in Lahore. Here, former national pacer and selector Aaqib Javed worked closely with him to refine his bowling mechanics, preparing him for the challenges of international cricket. His big break came during the Test series in England, where the PCB dropped seven senior players after consecutive losses and drafted seven fresh faces, including Razaullah, into the squad.
A Memorable Debut: Joe Root's Wicket and Batting Heroics
Making his Test debut at the historic Edgbaston ground, the 21-year-old Razaullah made an immediate impact on the global stage. On only the fourth delivery of his international career, he bowled a sensational ball to dismiss England's star batsman Joe Root, leaving cricket fans and pundits in awe. Later in the match, with Pakistan facing a potential innings defeat, Razaullah showcased his batting prowess. He played a fearless, counter-attacking innings of 81 runs, which included 9 massive sixes. One of his powerful hits traveled clean out of the stadium, landing inside an under-construction hotel building adjacent to the ground. This spectacular knock not only saved Pakistan from an innings defeat but also added a thrilling T20 style excitement to the traditional Test match.
