Batting for East Zone against South Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2026 final at Chennai's Chepauk Stadium on September 6, he attacked the South Zone bowlers from the outset. He smashed 44 runs off just 37 balls with 5 fours and a six, falling just 6 runs short of a half-century. Chama Milind eventually dismissed him, but before that Suryavanshi had already put on a solid 100-run opening stand with Abhimanyu Easwaran for the first wicket.
Another chapter in a stellar year of knockout cricket
This innings is only the latest addition to what has been an extraordinary year for the young opener. This is the eighth time in 2026 that Suryavanshi has scored more than 40 runs in a knockout match. Add up those eight innings and the tally reaches 706 runs, including one century and five half-centuries, which works out to an average of well over 88 runs an innings whenever he has crossed the 40-run mark in a knockout fixture this year. Consistently producing big scores under the pressure of knockout cricket shows that this teenager is no longer just a promising domestic name, he has become a genuine big-match player.
The year began with heroics at the Under-19 World Cup
The foundation for this remarkable year was laid at the Under-19 World Cup. In the semi-final against Afghanistan, Suryavanshi smashed 68 runs off just 33 balls. He then tore into England's bowlers in the final, blasting 175 runs off only 80 balls with 15 fours and 15 sixes. That innings powered India to a massive total of 411 runs, and the team went on to win the match by 100 runs to lift the Under-19 World Cup trophy.
IPL knockouts also saw him near a century twice
In IPL 2026 as well, Suryavanshi came agonisingly close to centuries in two consecutive knockout matches. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, he scored 97 runs off just 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and followed it up with 96 runs off 47 balls against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2. Despite Rajasthan Royals posting a huge total of 214 against Gujarat, the team still ended up losing that match.
More big scores against Sri Lanka and in the Duleep Trophy
Suryavanshi also blazed away in the final of the ODI series against Sri Lanka A, scoring 94 runs off just 20 balls. His form continued in the Duleep Trophy semi-final, where he scored 92 and 40 runs against Central Zone. During this run, he also became the youngest player to score a half-century in the Duleep Trophy, breaking Laxman Singh's 57-year-old record. Between the Under-19 World Cup, the IPL, the ODI series against Sri Lanka A and now the Duleep Trophy final, Suryavanshi has delivered under pressure across nearly every format and competition he has played through 2026, and these numbers make clear that his bat rarely stays quiet in high-pressure matches.
