Action cinema favorite Keanu Reeves is set to headline the upcoming Netflix thriller Maelstrom, directed by filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra. The project previously had Reacher star Alan Ritchson attached to lead, but following his unexplained exit from the production, Reeves has stepped in to take over the central role, adding yet another high-profile title to his active lineup.
A High-Stakes Siege During a Fierce Storm
The plot centers on a Federal Marshal assigned to guard the fiancée of an arms dealer who has turned state witness. The situation escalates dramatically when a brutal hurricane knocks out all communications and leaves the safe house isolated from outside reinforcements. Trapped in the tempest, the marshal must defend the witness through an intense, violent night against an armed assault launched by the dealer's ruthless syndicate, drawing structural parallels to a classic Die Hard scenario set in extreme weather.

The foundation of this high-concept project dates back to 1993, when an initial draft by the late Gregory Fitzpatrick first circulated through Hollywood studios. During that era, the spec script was acquired with stars like Steven Seagal, Sylvester Stallone, or Clint Eastwood envisioned for the lead role. Decades later, the material was revitalized with an updated script written by Mark Bianculli, known for How To Rob A Bank. While recently assembled around Ritchson, his sudden departure opened the path for Reeves to step into the survival thriller.
Expanding Production Slates for Star and Filmmaker
This project arrives amid a remarkably packed schedule for Reeves. The actor is circling James Wan's planned remake of The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil, while preparing for the pirate and shark time-loop thriller Shiver, Sonic The Hedgehog 4, and Ruben Östlund's satirical feature The Entertainment System Is Down. He is also connected to an untitled LEGO venture helmed by Josh Cooley and Patty Jenkins.
