Ahead of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, the Indian cricket team played a three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI at the NCC Ground in Colombo, securing a four-wicket victory. On the third and final day of the fixture, when India took the field for the second innings, star spinner Kuldeep Yadav did not bowl a single over. He had previously bowled 18 overs in the first innings, conceding 76 runs and picking up two wickets. His absence from the bowling attack on the final day sparked concerns regarding his physical fitness. Addressing these questions after the conclusion of the warm-up fixture, spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule cleared the air by stating that there are no fitness concerns surrounding the bowler and the decision to rest him was purely precautionary.
Assessing Physical Well-Being and Match Workload
Explaining the rationale behind resting the bowler, Sairaj Bahutule noted that the player had already delivered 18 overs during the match in addition to two or three overs in practice prior to the game, and his performance had been solid. Following that effort, the spinner wanted to take a brief break to understand how his body was feeling. Bahutule highlighted that having a wrist spinner in the squad is always advantageous as it brings variety to the bowling attack. Addressing queries about why other spinners like Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar, and Saransh Jain shouldered a heavier bowling workload, the coach explained that while experienced campaigners like Ravindra Jadeja have played extensively at the venue before, newer additions like Manav and Saransh need time to understand the correct line, length, and field placements required in these conditions.
Galle Pitch Assessment and Squad Updates
The opening match of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin on August 15 at the Galle stadium. Speaking about the combination for the playing eleven, Bahutule mentioned that a final decision regarding the lineup will be taken only after arriving in Galle and inspecting the pitch conditions. During the warm-up fixture, Devdutt Padikkal strengthened his claim for the number three batting position by playing a brilliant century. Commenting on this, the coach stated that the batter has proven his capability, though the final call will depend on the pitch for the opening Test. Meanwhile, in a major boost for the visiting side, captain Shubman Gill has fully regained his fitness and walked out to bat on the final day of the warm-up fixture.
