A major debate has erupted surrounding the Indian team management's strategy during the ongoing five-match T20 series against West Indies, particularly regarding the exclusion of star spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Veteran cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly voiced his displeasure over keeping the spinner out of the playing eleven for consecutive games. Ashwin argued that when opposing batsmen are visibly struggling to read a bowler, benching him makes very little logical sense. After featuring in the opening two fixtures in Lucknow and Ranchi, Kuldeep was dropped from the playing XIs for the subsequent matches in Indore and Hyderabad.
Defensive struggles and defeat in Hyderabad T20
The Indian bowling attack appeared severely depleted during the fourth T20 international played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. In that encounter, West Indies piled up a massive total of 247 runs in their allotted 20 overs, handing India a 24-run defeat. Following this setback, the five-match series was locked at 2-2. Taking to his official YouTube channel, Ashwin expressed deep surprise over why the team management chose to overlook Kuldeep for such crucial fixtures.
Ashwin criticizes the lack of common sense
Discussing the selection calls on his YouTube platform, Ashwin remarked that the decision to bench the spinner was utterly baffling. He pointed out that on pitches expected to offer good bounce, the visiting batters were completely clueless against Kuldeep's leg-spin and googlies, getting into immense trouble at the crease. According to him, leaving out a bowler whom the opposition fails to read highlights a glaring absence of common sense in the decision-making process. Ashwin maintained that on a high-scoring ground like Hyderabad, having Kuldeep in the attack could easily have saved 15 to 20 runs, potentially altering the final outcome in India's favor.
Analyzing early performances and shielding the bowler
Ashwin also reviewed Kuldeep's numbers from the first two games of the series. He noted that the spinner claimed 2 wickets while conceding 33 runs in the opening T20, and later leaked 53 runs in Ranchi where India ended up on the losing side. Addressing this phase, Ashwin stated that omitting Kuldeep specifically for the small boundaries of the Indore ground could be understood as a tactical move. However, he stressed that painting the Ranchi defeat as entirely Kuldeep's fault was entirely unfair, noting that placing the entire blame for a team loss on a single player is unjustified.
