The annals of women's Test cricket have been forever altered by a landmark performance from Indian wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia. Playing at the prestigious Lord's Cricket Ground in London during the ongoing one-off Test against England, the 25-year-old displayed remarkable composure to register a century. With this feat, Yastika has etched her name in the history books as the very first female cricketer to ever score a Test century at this legendary venue. Beyond being a monumental moment for the sport, it also marks the first international century of her professional career, significantly bolstering India's position in the high-stakes match.
A Historic Century at the Home of Cricket
The ongoing Test at Lord's, a venue revered as the spiritual home of the sport, has been transformed by Yastika's brilliant batting display. During the second innings, she showcased exceptional grit and technical proficiency, accumulating 113 runs off just 158 deliveries. Her innings was characterized by 14 boundaries, which maintained consistent pressure on the English bowling attack throughout her time at the crease. This century is not merely a highlight of her personal journey but serves as a defining chapter in the evolution of women's Test cricket.
Redefining Indian Records
Yastika Bhatia's achievement extends beyond the global record, as she has also surpassed several benchmarks within Indian cricket. She is now the first Indian woman to record a century in the third or fourth innings of a Test match. Furthermore, she now holds the record for the highest individual score by an Indian woman during this phase of the game. Previously, this record was held by Sandhya Agarwal, who scored 98 runs during the fourth innings of the Lucknow Test against New Zealand in 1985. Agarwal also contributed a notable 83-run innings against Australia in 1984, a record that Yastika has now comprehensively overtaken.
Joining the Elite Club
Yastika’s achievement places her in an elite circle of cricketers. She has become only the second left-handed Indian batter to achieve the feat of scoring a Test century at Lord's. This milestone was previously reached only by former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who famously scored 131 runs during his debut Test at the venue in 1996. Yastika now joins the select few Indian cricketers who have distinguished themselves by scoring a century at this iconic stadium, earning a place on the prestigious Lord's Honors Board.
