A grim case of domestic violence culminating in murder has surfaced in Karnataka's capital, Bengaluru, where a man killed his wife following ongoing disputes over household finances and his earnings. The crime came to light completely by chance during a routine clean-up of a vacant plot in the Sampigehalli area, prompted by municipal guidelines requiring property owners to maintain their land or face penalties. Sanitation workers clearing debris and overgrown bushes stumbled upon a decomposed body, unraveling a crime that had remained concealed for nearly three weeks.
Discovery on a Vacant Plot in Sampigehalli
The sequence of events leading to the revelation began when the owner of an open plot in Agrahara Layout, situated near MS Nagar in Sampigehalli, commissioned workers to clean the premises. While clearing the ground, the workers discovered the heavily decomposed remains of an unidentified woman. The landowner alerted the Sampigehalli police, who promptly secured the area and initiated an inquiry. By the time the remains were found, 20 days had elapsed since the murder, and stray animals had severely mauled and dragged the corpse, rendering physical identification nearly impossible. Faced with an unidentified body, police personnel arranged for the final rites while forensic and investigative work continued.
Secret Marriage and Relocation from Odisha
As the investigation progressed, detectives pieced together the background of the victim and her spouse. Sagar Chand and his wife, Anusuya, both natives of Odisha, had relocated to Bengaluru in search of employment. The couple had entered into a love marriage two years prior, keeping the union completely hidden from Anusuya's family to avoid their disapproval. Fearing familial backlash, they abruptly left Odisha without informing anyone. In fact, Anusuya's relatives learned about her marriage only after the authorities notified them of her demise. While living in the city, both worked in the hospitality sector to earn a living, with Sagar Chand employed as a kitchen supervisor at a local hotel.
Financial Strains and Deadly Escalation
Persistent disagreements over earnings and expenses had strained the couple's relationship. According to investigators, Anusuya had started visiting Sagar Chand's workplace with regularity, often confronting him over his salary and financial contributions. On August 11, another confrontation erupted between the two over monetary matters. The dispute continued as they returned to their residence, where the argument escalated into violence. In the midst of the confrontation, Sagar Chand overpowered his wife and strangled her to death.

Rather than fleeing immediately, the accused remained inside the shared residence alongside his wife's lifeless body for three full days. When the situation became untenable, he wrapped the corpse inside bedding material and covertly dumped it in the nearby overgrown, empty plot under the cover of darkness. Over the subsequent four to five days, Sagar Chand repeatedly loitered near the location to monitor whether passersby or authorities noticed anything unusual. Confident that his actions had gone undetected, he resumed his everyday duties as a kitchen supervisor at the hotel as though nothing had transpired.
Garment Tag Leads Detectives to the Killer
The breakthrough in the probe emerged from a small clue recovered at the scene: a commercial retail clothing tag from a shopping mall remained intact on the victim's attire. Investigators traced the tag back to the specific store, which yielded Anusuya's customer contact details and established her identity. Armed with this lead, police approached the hotel where her husband worked, gathering statements from colleagues about the recurring domestic disputes regarding his pay. The Sampigehalli police then detained Sagar Chand for formal interrogation. Confronted with the evidence, he admitted to the homicide and the subsequent disposal of the body, leading to his formal arrest.
