A Delhi court has delivered a significant verdict in a high-profile murder case, holding a husband accountable for the violent death of his estranged wife. Principal District and Sessions Judge Sanjay Garg presided over the proceedings, ultimately finding the accused husband, Aman, guilty of murdering his wife Rashmi, also known as Reshma. However, the judicial ruling also brought partial relief to the defense, as the court chose to clear both Aman and his mother, Sangeeta, of separate charges related to dowry death and matrimonial cruelty, citing a lack of substantial and concrete proof to substantiate those specific allegations.
Details Of The Incident And Marital Discord
According to the prosecution details presented during the trial, Rashmi had been residing separately in a rented accommodation located in the Nand Nagri area of North-East Delhi, along with her mother and their infant daughter. On February 25, 2025, Aman visited her at the residence. During this meeting, a fierce altercation reportedly broke out between the couple. Investigators stated that in the heat of the ensuing dispute, Aman used Rashmi's own chunni to strangle her to death. Following the fatal incident, the accused took his young daughter and walked straight to a police station to surrender.
Circumstantial Evidence And Medical Findings
Given that the criminal trial lacked any direct eyewitnesses to the actual crime, the prosecution built its entire case relying heavily on a chain of circumstantial evidence gathered by law enforcement officials. The court noted in its detailed order that although a direct witness was absent, the circumstantial trail established by the state pointing toward the husband was credible. Furthermore, the official post-mortem examination report corroborated the cause of death as asphyxia resulting from strangulation. The medical findings indicated that the injuries sustained around the neck were severe enough in the ordinary course of nature to cause death, cementing the court's decision to convict Aman of murder.
Scrutiny Of Dowry Harassment Allegations
Initially, both Aman and his mother Sangeeta faced grave charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to dowry death and cruelty. Members of Rashmi's family had alleged that she faced persistent harassment over demands for a motorcycle and one and a half lakh rupees in cash. Upon judicial evaluation, however, the court observed that these claims were made in a generalized manner by witnesses without the backing of specific details or robust corroboration on record. The judiciary noted that the available material pointed more toward a deep-seated suspicion held by Aman regarding Rashmi's character as the primary catalyst for their ongoing marital strife.
Acquittal On Dowry Counts And Final Judicial Stance
The court explicitly stated that the possibility of the dowry-related allegations being framed after Rashmi's unfortunate death could not be entirely ruled out. Because the prosecution failed to establish the foundational elements of the dowry harassment charges with sufficient legal rigor, the bench extended the benefit of the doubt on those specific counts, formally acquitting both Aman and Sangeeta of cruelty and dowry death. Nevertheless, the conviction of Aman for the intentional murder of his wife stands firmly established based on the medical evidence and the proven circumstances surrounding the fatal day.
