According to a formal announcement distributed by the Office of the Senior Superintendent of Police in Sivasagar on August 26, 2026, the unit was mandated to conduct a meticulous and objective examination into Bihubar Police Station Case No. 10/2026.

Heading the investigative squad is Lila Bora, the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Sivasagar. The squad further comprises Mridul Hazarika, Officer-in-Charge at Amguri Police Station, along with Sub-Inspector (UB) Siraj Saikia and Women Sub-Inspector (UB) Sumi Barman, both attached to Nazira Police Station. Authorities assigned SI Siraj Saikia to serve directly as the primary investigating officer overseeing the case files.

Legal charges are filed under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), addressing murder and joint criminal liability.

Acting on specific allegations submitted by representatives of the Bir Lachit Sena, law enforcement officers apprehended five suspects listed in the filing. The detained individuals are Abidur Rahman, Subera Begum, Selimur Rahman, Selima Begum, and Anowara Begum. Police gathered these individuals from areas near Bihubar as well as the vicinity of Simaluguri railway station, after which they were taken into custody for detailed police questioning by Sivasagar Police personnel.

The situation originally unfolded on August 23, 2026, when passersby discovered Manasjyoti Chetia lying with severe wounds beside a road located in Birubor, within Sivasagar district. Emergency personnel arranged his swift transfer to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) situated in Dibrugarh for emergency treatment. Despite intensive medical effort over two days, Chetia passed away from his wounds on August 25, 2026.
Medical doctors performing the post-mortem procedure identified numerous traumatic wounds across his body, noting particularly destructive trauma on the rear side of his head. Prior to the formation of the police investigation squad, the Assam state administration had already instituted a separate magisterial inquiry to evaluate the circumstances of his tragic passing.
